The Structured Quantum Optics (SQO) group at the Institute for Quantum Studies at Schmid College of Science and Technology Chapman University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in experimental quantum optics starting November 2025 (start date negotiable).
The postdoctoral fellow will join a vibrant and expanding research program centered on quantum optics with structured photons for quantum sensing quantum communication and quantum simulation. The position is initially for one year with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional years subject to performance and funding. The candidate will also have the opportunity to collaborate closely with members of the SQO group and the Max Planck Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics at the University of Ottawa in Canada.
Chapman University located in the heart of Orange County California is a nationally ranked R2 research institution with a strong commitment to world-class research and innovative teaching. The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities in the Keck Center for Science and Engineering and will be part of a collaborative research environment spanning optics quantum science and interdisciplinary applications.
Key Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated early-career scientist who will:
- Lead Project Development and Experiments
- Design and perform experiments in quantum optics with structured photons.
- Develop and implement techniques for generating manipulating and detecting structured light using high-power lasers spatial light modulators q-plates and advanced detectors.
- Mentorship and Collaboration
- Mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in the lab.
- Contribute to collaborative projects within Chapman and with external partners.
- Research and Dissemination
- Collect analyze and interpret experimental data.
- Write technical reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
- Present results at national and international conferences workshops and seminars.
Required qualifications:
- A PhD in Physics Optical Science Quantum Optics or a closely related field (degree awarded within the past 5 years).
- Hands-on experience in optics and quantum optics laboratories.
- Demonstrated expertise with spatial light modulators high-power lasers detectors and structured light generation /detection.
- Proven ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in quantum sensing quantum communication or quantum simulation.
- Track record of publishing in high-impact journals.
- Experience mentoring students at various levels.
