The Role

Primary

The ADAS/AV Safety Field Investigations Engineer (SFIE) is responsible for leading the initial assessment of ADAS Level 2 and Autonomous Vehicle (AV) field incidents ensuring General Motors compliance with NHTSA Standing General Order 2021-01 and applicable Canadian safety regulations.

Secondary

The Safety Field Investigations Engineer (SFIE) is responsible for leading GMNA investigations and managing issue reviews through the Safety Field Investigations (SFI) process.

What Youll Do (Responsibilities)

ADAS/AV Internal Investigations Engineer

Incident Intake & Logging

  • Review and log qualifying SMS/email AACN notifications and other ADAS L2/AV incident reports into the ADAS tracker.

  • Verify crash reports via OnStar recordings and log confirmed incidents.

  • Validate Super Cruise (SC) state change data using the Elastic dashboard.

Incident Assessment & Data Management

  • Confirm crash locations using SC map and Google Maps.

  • Analyze 1411 (SC State Change) and 1414 (Crash Event) data.

  • Determine if incidents meet SGO reporting criteria.

  • Archive relevant data and reports; close tracker items and initiate SGO reporting.

Additional Vehicle Data Acquisition

  • Coordinate vehicle data requests with GM Legal.

  • Support legal requests including file management and ESIS data retrieval issue resolution.

  • Contribute to SGO process optimization initiatives.

Process Development & Issue Resolution

  • Enhance SC field incident response processes and shutdown playbook instructions.

  • Resolve back-office data generation and transfer issues.

Safety Field Investigations Engineer (SFIE)

Leads GMNA investigations and manages issue reviews through the Safety Field Investigations (SFI) process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate investigations for vehicle propulsion or software performance issues identified internally or by government agencies.

  • Assemble and lead cross-functional teams including engineering leaders subject matter experts quality purchasing and assembly to analyze issues.

  • Collaborate with regulatory crashworthiness and engineering assessment experts.

  • Drive investigations from initiation through recommendation potentially resulting in Prevent Repeat Defects (PRD) or Learning Advisories.

Core Tasks

  • Conduct fact-finding root cause analysis and population determinations.

  • Apply statistical and problem-solving techniques (DFSS Red X computer analysis).

  • Assess field performance and predict future trends.

  • Develop potential remedies and cost estimates.

  • Prepare investigation summaries and present findings to senior leadership.

  • Evaluate impact on vehicle and occupant performance; coordinate demonstrations modeling and simulations as needed.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support for government supplier quality and assembly investigations including risk assessments.

  • Ensure timely closure of investigations with root cause identification and preventive actions.

  • Maintain historical data on past investigations and field actions.

  • Lead special projects to improve investigation techniques and timing.

  • Coach engineering staff on SFI processes through training and seminars.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering Chemistry Math Physics or Computer Science

  • 5 years total experience with thorough knowledge of vehicle engineering (Design Release Test Systems Management Product Safety and/or Validation Processes)

  • Excellent analytical skills capable of technical debate with opposing subject matter experts

  • Superior interpersonal communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to manage a multitude of investigations/assignments and simultaneously make progress on many issues at various stages of investigation/assignment

  • Initiative and ability to work with little direction

  • Ability to break down complex issues into understandable pieces

  • Unquestioned personal integrity

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 10 years of experience with deep knowledge of vehicle engineering including design release testing and validation processes.

  • Graduate degree (MS or Ph.D.) in Chemical Mechanical Biomechanics Engineering Mechanics Electrical Civil Engineering or Chemistry.

  • DFSS Black Belt Certification.

  • Recognized industry leader or technical expert in complex systems related to safety or non-compliance investigations such as:

  • Sensing diagnostics and diagnostic modules

  • Safety restraint systems (airbags safety belts suppression systems)

  • Propulsion braking and steering systems

  • Battery hybrid and electrification technologies

This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis and successfully complete a Motor Vehicle Report review.
