About the Program
Southlake Healths Regional Cancer Centre (SRCC) a proud member of the Princess Margaret (PM) Cancer Care Network is a leader in cancer careproviding screening diagnostic testing radiation chemotherapy and supportive care for patients across York Region and South Simcoe County.
In collaboration with Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Southlake co-leads a unique Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) Oncology Program dedicated to addressing the distinct medical and psychosocial needs of patients aged 18 to 43 living with cancer. The AYA Program at Southlake the first integrated AYA cancer program of its kind in Canada aims to support patients through all stages of their cancer journey from diagnosis to survivorship and/or palliation.
Position Overview
The Physician Assistant (PA) will play a key role in delivering specialized clinical care and program leadership within the AYA Oncology Program. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team across SRCC and PM the AYA PA will provide individualized assessments counselling and navigation support for AYA patients while contributing to ongoing program development patient engagement and quality improvement initiatives.
This role offers an opportunity to work both independently and collaboratively with partial work-from-home flexibility and a minimum on-site presence of one day per week at SRCC.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Care:
- Provide specialized developmentally appropriate clinical care for AYA patients with cancer.
- Address domains of support including fertility preservation coping with treatment survivorship body image sexual health mental health relationships nutrition exercise and return to school/work.
- Offer timely counselling on fertility and sexual health side effects and coordinate referrals with relevant services (e.g. reproductive endocrinology urology gynecology psychosocial oncology).
- Facilitate referrals to internal and external supports developing a strong understanding of available hospital and community resources.
- Coordinate and lead local AYA patient meet-up group events (4 annually).
- Serve as an accessible resource for patients families and staff regarding AYA-specific concerns.
Qualifications :
- Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC) or eligible to be certified by PACCC
- Eligible to work in Canada/Ontario
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in an oral and written format with patients public colleagues and other health disciplines
- Demonstrated ability to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
- Proficient and appropriate use of diagnostic and procedural skills
- Demonstrated effective problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Demonstrated and proven ability to work in a collaborative care model with all members of the health care team
- Demonstrated ability to perform well in critical and high stress situations
- Demonstrated commitment to continuing education activities supporting ongoing professional learning
- Demonstrated commitment to patient safety
- Demonstrated ability to apply basic computer skills
- Willingness to work with the DMOH team to develop appropriate medical directives and evolve the role to meet the patient/program needs
