Job Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager.

Position Specific Summary:

The Assistant Nurse Manager on Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and manages direct care nursing functions to assure that health services medical care medical/health professions education and evidence based practice research programs are delivered effectively and efficiently. Positions in this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities. Efforts will focus on planning organizing directing evaluating and improving health care operations clinical and education programs of clinical departments.

Position Specific Duties

Hire or assist in hiring nursing unit staff through effective and timely recommendations

Develop and manage the talents strengths and behaviors of assigned staff as directed by nurse manager

Completes staff evaluations for assigned staff on time with written solid justification

Assure staff members are compliant with competencies policies procedures and regulations

Understand and apply appropriately the provisions in the union contracts

Actively help manage operating expenses for the unit name/ clinic name by monitoring the unit/clinics operating budget

Review financial reports and provide insights to budget variances to nurse leaders

Recommend budget ideas resources and cost containment strategies

Collaborate with nurse leaders to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction opportunities for improvement

Implement and maintain standards and quality plans

Engage staff in meeting plan goals

Supervise care delivery and assist in coordinating patient care teams on the unit

Serve as a resource for patient care problems

May provide some patient care

Collaborate with nursing leaders to develop and implement unit/clinic or division strategic plans

Communicate with physicians staff and other health care providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient operations within the unit/clinic

Communicate with patients families and staff to address and resolve issues

Provide evaluative feedback for staff members and health care students

Work with clinical instructors/educators to facilitate clinical education experiences

Support unit evidence based practice research initiatives

Percent of Time: 100%
Schedule:40 hours per week Monday-Friday evening and night shift
Location:Stead Family Childrens Hospital (SFCH)
Rotations: Weekend and holiday call per divisional guidelines

Education Required:

  • Baccalaureate in Nursing is required

Required Qualifications:

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire
  • Minimum 2yearscurrent or recent (within the last 12 months) experience in pediatric critical care nursing
  • Certification in Pediatric Critical Care Nursing is required by six months of hire
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Proficiency with computer software applications (such as Microsoft programs)
  • Demonstrates time management organization of workload delegation attention to detail and thoroughness
  • Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships with nursing staff medical staff interdisciplinary teams and other hospital departments
  • Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient education

  • Professional job-related experience fostering or promoting a welcoming and respectful work/academic environment where people of all backgrounds and perspectives feel welcomed and appreciated; or demonstrated the ability to do so

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Current experience managing/leading transitions in care
  • Knowledge of UI and UI Health Care policies procedures and regulations
  • Experience working in a large academic medical center
  • Experience working in a union environment
  • PALS Instructor certification
