POSITION: Jurisprudence and Ethics Adjunct Instructor
DEPARTMENT: Doctor of Chiropractic Program
REPORTS TO: Dean DC Program
SCHEDULE: Part-time; Varies
CLASSIFICATION: Exempt; Non-benefited
COMPENSATION: $925 per credit hour
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
This adjunct position will be assigned to a lecture position (face to face online or a combination of the two based on curricular needs and instructor qualifications). Instructional topics vary including but not limited to:
- Defining terminology commonly encountered in health care law
- Using terminology related to principles of ethics and professional boundaries applicable to chiropractic practice
- Identifying the types of courts and procedures unique to each
- Applying principles of ethics and professional boundaries to chiropractic practice scenarios
- Applying the laws pertaining to chiropractic physicians duties under State law
- Using terminology related to health care laws and regulations applicable to chiropractic practice
- Describing mandatory reporting circumstances for licensed chiropractors
- Applying concepts related to health care laws and regulations to chiropractic practice situations
- Differentiating the various types of malpractice actions
- Applying concepts related to expected professional conduct in chiropractic practice
- Identifying various parties roles and responsibilities in malpractice actions
- Considering various ethical and legal risks associated with chiropractic practice
- Describing the types of business liability.
Such instruction introduces and develops the knowledge skill critical thinking and professionalism necessary for graduating students to function as an evidence-informed doctor of chiropractic. The assigned work schedule to meet the needs of the program is to be agreed upon at hire and reviewed/updated annually.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary duties will vary according to teaching responsibilities each term including but not limited to:
- Prepare and deliver lecture course using appropriate presentation methodologies and classroom aids.
- Utilize the universitys learning and assessment management systems to augment and support student learning in assigned teaching areas.
- Adhere to course-level student learning outcomes
- Develop and implement valid and appropriate assessment strategies to demonstrate student learning of course outcomes goals and competencies.
- Create and/or compile course materials such as assigned textbooks notes online resources and/or bibliographies of specialized materials for reading and writing assignments.
- Stimulate class discussions and student participation in learning activities.
- Adhere to all federal HIPAA and FERPA requirements plus those standards established by UWS for protecting the security and privacy of patient health data and student records.
- Adhere to all state & federal OSHA regulations.
- Demonstrate appropriate ethical communication appearance and behavior attributes consistent with being a professional and a member of the faculty.
QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge skills and abilities needed to perform job):
- Ability to access read appraise and apply information relative to ones field of specialization.
- Ability to create instructional materials using original or innovative techniques or style.
- Ability to deliver effective presentations on controversial or complex topics to chiropractic students and/or post-graduate students.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
- Ability to understand scientific data presented in many forms (e.g. mathematical formulas statistics illustrations graphs etc.).
- Ability to learn synthesize and/or apply the abstract and concrete principles in ones field of specialization.
- Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Have sufficient stamina to provide lecture with brief breaks over a 1 to 3-hour period.
- Have sufficient mobility to move among students engaged in various types of learning activities.
- Have sufficient manual dexterity to operate equipment as instructional activities demand.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS (Education Training and Experience):
- Doctor of Chiropractic with private practice experience preferred
- Experience on a regulatory board preferred.
- Prior teaching experience preferred.
