Our client located in Washington DC is seeking a Vice President of Policy and Advocacy. This is an excellent opportunity to run advocacy campaigns and build relationships that engage priority legislative and regulatory policy issues! This position is hybrid requiring two days per week in the office.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Vice President of Policy and Advocacy directs the day-to-day operations of the organizations constituent advocacy programs including grassroots and grasstops efforts and plays a key role in shaping advocacy campaigns. This position drives strategy and oversight for grassroots and grasstops advocacy aligning every initiative with the organizations policy priorities.
The Vice President ensures that advocacy strategies maximize return on investment and advance the organizations mission. Success in this role requires exceptional relationship-building skills and the ability to engage diverse stakeholders. This role works closely with internal leadership state associations and senior executives to strengthen industry involvement in policy advocacy.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop and design strategy to increase policy involvement of members and promote advocacy and grassroots programs.
- Oversee messaging creative development and placement for grassroots ads and other advocacy collateral and content as appropriate.
- Leverage insights from focus groups polling and other research tools to inform advocacy strategies and enhance message effectiveness.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders including staff state associations volunteer leadership and others to maximize success of advocacy programs.
- Collaborate closely with the organizations policy and communications teams to deliver unified impactful campaigns.
- Serve as presenter and key staff expert on the importance of policy advocacy at conferences schools and internal meetings.
- Serve as staff liaison to grassroots ambassador groups; recruit and manage volunteer leadership; lead meetings and calls.
- Expand the grassroots program to bolster grasstops efforts.
- Oversee grassroots program budget.
- Manage vendor relationships to execute program tactics and provide program support.
- Develop and report KPIs for advocacy engagement and program effectiveness.
- Ensure adherence to all applicable advocacy regulations working in concert with the organizations finance team and internal and outside counsel as appropriate.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Demonstrated ability to manage and mentor small teams
- Ability to develop strategies to enhance and promote the operations of the organization
- Exceptional communications skills
- Ability to build relationships with varied stakeholders across multiple mediums including in-person and virtual briefings
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to read understand and summarize legislation and identify and flag issues relevant to members
- Ability to work independently when needed and with internal and external staff to produce required assignments without direct supervision
- Ability and willingness to travel 20-35%
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelors degree in government political science public policy or related field
- 10 years of experience with advocacy government relations and/or public policy
- Experience in developing and implementing grassroots advocacy programs at the federal level; additional state and local exposure is a plus
- Experience with digital advocacy tools and data analytics for measuring engagement
- Demonstrated success in engaging C-suite leaders and motivating volunteer advocates
- Knowledge of the federal legislative process
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Large active personal network within the policy and financial services communities
- Membership organization experience
