Description

The Office of Budget and Finance (OBF) is seeking a Principal Accountant to manage the countys Purchasing Card Program and oversee capital asset accounting. This position plays a key role in ensuring compliance with accounting standards and maintaining the integrity of countywide financial data. Using PeopleSoft applications the Principal Accountant will also support financial reporting for the Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports (ACFR) Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) and Regional Railroad Authority (RRA) and perform advanced accounting for the Employee Health Self-Insurance Fund. As a vital member of the accounting team this role contributes to a broad range of financial operations and reporting functions.

Location and hours:
This position is remote. Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days a year for work meetings trainings or for any other reasons that their supervisor may deem necessary (may include additional days for onboarding and new employee training). Supervisors will provide as much advance notice as practicable. Based on business needs of this position hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota. Work hours are Monday through Friday 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m.

In this position you will:

  • Manage the countys purchasing card program including complex accounting and coordination responsibilities for the program which has over $7 million annual spend and over 400 cardholders.
  • Manage the countys capital asset accounting and inventory tracking ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.
  • Prepare and review sections of theACFR including capital assets and lease disclosures.
  • PerformGASB 87 lease accounting including journal entries and government-wide conversion entries.
  • Prepare annual financial reports for theHRA and RRA.
  • Provide leadership training and work directions to professional staff related to the countys accounting operations.

Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Eight years or more of experience as an accountant or auditor two of which are in a functional area of accounting auditing or financial management related to the position.
    • Bachelors degree or higher in accounting business administration with an emphasis in accounting or other specialty area related to the position andfour years of experience as an accountant or auditor two of which are in a functional area of accounting auditing or financial management related to the position.
Nice to have:
  • Experience:
    • Managing Hennepin Countys purchasing card program.
    • With capital asset accounting lease accounting and financial reporting.
    • With professional accounting related to self-insurance programs.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards especially GASB 87.
  • Ability to:
    • Handle multiple priorities with minimal direction.
    • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Meet deadlines and produce accurate work in a fast-paced office environment.
