POSITION SPECIFICS

The Graduate Program in Acoustics and the Applied Research Laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University in University Park PA are pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track or tenured position at theAssociate or Full Professorlevel in underwater and/or ocean acoustics. Applicants should have extensive records of building large-scale collaborative partnerships and programs among academia governmental agencies industry and research institutions. Applicants should also have qualifications appropriate for an appointment as a tenure-track/tenured Associate Professor or Professor in the College of Engineering.

The Graduate Program in Acoustics is one of the worlds premier resources in acoustics education and research and it was established in are currently 35 Acoustics faculty members from Penn State who contribute to the missions of teaching research and Program offers Graduate Certificates and . M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in acoustics. There are over 30 resident Acoustics graduate students at the University Park campus and over 100 students online who are seeking or considering . degrees or a Graduate Certificate through the distance learning option. The Acoustics Program is administratively aligned with the Department of Aerospace Engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering but maintains separate curricula examinations space and budgets.

The Applied Research Laboratory is one of five U.S. Navy and one of fifteen Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers. With over 1500 full-time employees and 200 student employees the Laboratory is the nations third largest University Affiliated Research Center. The Laboratorys core research interests are focused in four areas: undersea systems; fluid dynamics and acoustics; advanced materials and manufacturing systems; and communications and information systems.

The Laboratory is an independent unit of the University but is co-located on the campus at University Park. The Laboratory enjoys a collaborative relationship with the College of Engineering. One of the goals of the Laboratory is to connect the fundamental research of the University to applied solutions for the Laboratorys government sponsors and corresponding industrial partners. One purpose of this joint faculty position is to strengthen that bridge by conducting research that spans the full spectrum of Department of Defense Research and Development activities.

It is expected that any successful candidate will spend about fifty percent of their time each year within the College of Engineering Graduate Program in Acoustics and fifty percent at the Applied Research Laboratory. A candidate-unique agreement will be signed by both organizations relative to specific requirements and expectations.

Applicants should have an excellent sustained record of obtaining defense-related research funding and preferably a strong track record of teaching and advising graduate students. The successful candidates are expected to teach courses at primarily graduate levels develop an internationally-recognized externally-funded research program and contribute to the operation and promotion of the department college university and profession through service. Appointments will be made at a rank commensurate with experience.
