Job Summary

Summary of Duties

The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) establishes caring therapeutic relationships with patients residents and their families to attain or maintain optimal functioning by promoting health and/or treating health conditions through supportive preventative therapeutic palliative and rehabilitative means. The RPN provides excellent patient and family-centered nursing care to patients with less complex health needs and more predictable outcomes in a culturally sensitive manner. The RPN also works collaboratively with Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide elements of care for patients with complex health issues and with less predictable outcomes. The RPN is an autonomous professional who works independently and interdependently as part of the interdisciplinary health care team.

Qualifications/Skills

  • Current registration in good standing from the College of Nurses of Ontario with no restrictions to practice

  • Diploma in RPN required or currently bridging towards a diploma with a commitment to complete within 2 - 3 years of hire

  • Recent successful completion of a Physical Assessment course or a commitment to complete it within 6 months of hire

  • Recent successful completion of a Medication Administration course or a commitment to complete it within 6 months of hire

  • Current BCLS is required and commitment to on-going renewal

  • Membership in RPNAO preferred

  • Previous clinical experience relative to the patient population the unit serves

  • Demonstrated professional judgment and interpersonal skills in dealing with patients their families other health care team members and the community

  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner

  • Ability to organize patient care demands and to set priorities

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with RNs RPNs physicians and other members of the health care team.

  • Effective verbal / written communication skills.

  • Committed to ongoing professional development

  • Demonstrated commitment to Person Centered Care approach and principles.
