What Youll Do

Samsung Display America Lab is looking for an Optical engineer intern who will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge technologies for next-generation XR display and optics systems and devices. As an Optical engineer intern you will help to build the next-generation optical systems for XR by evaluating the impact of the optical system on the users. The team pursues research & development to provide optics solution to support display manufacturing for VR AR business.

Location: Daily onsite presence at our San Jose CA headquarters in alignment with our Flexible Work policy

• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to develop and mature state-of-the-art technologies;
• Perform in-depth optical design simulation and analysis using tools like Code V Zemax LightTools Lumerical and Rsoft to provide recommendations for system improvement
• Perform optical system design and simulation for rotationally symmetrical optics freeform as well as metalens;
• Determine hardware specifications to assess overall performance of novel optical architectures;
• Debug and troubleshooting of optical problems;
• Write code to support optical design simulation and analysis;
• Report and present results to guide design decisions.
• Complete other responsibilities as assigned.

What You Bring

• Pursuing PhD or Master degree in Optics Electrical Engineering Physics or related areas PhD preferred;
• Expertise in one or more areas: optical design modeling metrology freeform metalens etc.;
• Expertise and experience in coding data analysis and statistical modeling;
• Strong publication record demonstrating innovative research preferred;
• Experience in VR AR display and optics is a plus;
• Experience in meta-surface design and fabrication is a plus;
• Experience in geometrical optics and wave optics including FDTD RCWA techniques is a plus;
• Passionate about building extraordinary products;
• Good communication skills and presentation skills able to clearly articulate the problem statements and the solution approach;
• A willingness to dive deep experiment rapidly to get things done preferred;
• Innovative and creative you proactively explore new ideas and adapt quickly to change.
