Job Summary:

Address: 933 E. Pierce St. - Council Bluffs IA

Work Schedule: 35 hrs./wk. primarily evening hours and weekend coverage as needed.

Assist with the delivery of patient activities in the acute care psychiatric setting. Primary responsibilities include planning organizing and assisting with developing a diversified activity and recreational program.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

Interview process observations collaborating with the patient to assign an intervention and both 1:1 and group participation in order to plan care.

  • Completion of Therapeutic Recreation (T.R.) assessments within 72 hrs of admission of all assigned programs.

Documents daily through anecdotal charting to monitor patients progress on his or her assigned Therapeutic Recreation (TR) intervention and behaviors observed while participating in therapeutic recreation 1:1s and groups.

  • Completion of daily anecdotal charting that reflects the Therapeutic Recreation (T.R.) intervention designed for that patient.

Attend scheduled multidisciplinary team meetings and provide Therapeutic Recreation intervention(s) information to a member of the team prior to the team meeting to be placed on the Multidisciplinary Treatment Plan.

  • Completion of all multidisciplinary treatment plans with appropriate Therapeutic Recreation (T.R.) interventions and signature assigned to each patients case load.

Schedules coordinates and carries through consistently all Therapeutic Recreation groups and 1:1s assigned to case load.

  • Groups and 1:1s are planned to provide opportunity for the patient to work on treatment plans goal and interventions.

Provides appropriate care specific to the age of the patient.

  • Conduct Therapeutic Recreation (T.R.) groups and 1:1s designed to meet individuals needs. Makes cost effective purchases and decisions for scope of therapy.

Maintains accountability for continued professional growth in order to maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver quality patient care.

  • Each therapist must obtain Continuing Education Units (CEUs) required for licensure.

Supervises pet therapy on unit.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

  • Directs the planning and implementation of activities for all patients in accordance with needs capabilities and provider order to support excellence in patient care delivery.
  • Management of human fiscal and other resources to provide for efficient and cost-effective patient care.
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures to assure compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent professional and courteous manner.

Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Participates in in-service training and team meetings.
  • Works together with other departments when they need help in program development or other issues related to recreational activities.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships between Behavioral Health and other hospital departments and outside community agencies.
  • Orients new staff members to recreational therapist role within Behavioral Health.
  • Keeps Director of Behavioral Health informed of patient needs and community issues.

Performance Improvement

  • Overall work performance is dedicated to meeting and exceeding the performance improvement standards for the department.
  • Participates in department performance improvement program and projects.

Business Acumen

  • Is vigilant to the day to day business fluctuations and responds promptly to re-prioritized assignments to fit the need.
  • Performs routine assignments independently.
  • Advises appropriate personnel (i.e. Supervisor) of situations requiring administrative medical or technical expertise and follow-up.
  • Manages his/her time effectively. Completes all assignments within the allotted time frame. Establishes priorities for using his/her time to the best advantage.

Safety Initiative

  • Performs job duties in a manner consistent with organization and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Completes departmental safety requirements I.e. annual competencies departmental in-services etc. on an annual basis.

Schedule:

35 hrs./wk. primarily evening hours and weekend coverage as needed.

Job Description:

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelors degree in leisure and recreation science therapeutic recreation or/ an associated field from an accredited college or university OR equivalent combination of education/experience combined (one year of education equals one year of experience) required in recreation management recreation therapy or a related field.


License/Certifications

  • Certification by National Certification Council for Activity Professionals or related certification preferred.


Experience

  • Professional educational and or personal knowledge of diagnoses and related symptomology commonly seen on an inpatient psychiatric setting preferred.


Skills

  • Able to effectively plan and implement therapeutic activities in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Knowledge of recreational therapy and assessment.
  • Skill in coordinating an organizing group and individual activities.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to think innovatively and utilize program planning skills to create recreational activities.
  • Competency with Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

Physical

  • Continuously stand walk or lift handle carry material or equipment of moderate weight. (up to 50 pounds).


Environmental

  • Located in an indoor area with frequent exposure to mild physical discomfort from dust fumes temperature and noise.


Hazards

  • Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Category 1: Tasks that involve exposure to blood body fluids tissues and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Potential for physically acting out patients and health related communicable diseases.
