About the opportunity

The Laboratory Technician will support core research activities within the Tasmanian School of Medicine with a focus on library preparation and sequencing workflows. This role contributes to the Universitys mission by enabling high-quality genomic data generation that underpins health and biomedical research. Working as part of a collaborative laboratory team the technician will apply established protocols for sample handling library construction and sequencing ensuring accuracy and consistency. The position requires sound knowledge of molecular biology techniques attention to detail and the ability to work independently while communicating effectively with colleagues and researchers. The role sits within a service-oriented research environment and involves routine decision-making troubleshooting and maintaining laboratory standards. What youll do:

  • Perform DNA/RNA extraction quantification and quality control using established protocols.
  • Prepare sequencing libraries with precision and consistency ensuring reproducibility across batches.
  • Operate and maintain sequencing instruments (e.g. Illumina platforms) adhering to manufacturer and lab guidelines.
  • Ensure lab equipment is calibrated maintained and ready for use.
  • Monitor inventory of reagents and consumables initiating orders to avoid workflow disruptions.

What were looking for:

  • Demonstrated experience in DNA/RNA extraction quantification and quality control.
  • Proficiency in library preparation techniques for next-generation sequencing (e.g. Illumina workflows).
  • Familiarity with sequencing platforms and associated software (e.g. Qubit).
  • Experience with electronic lab notebooks and sample management systems.
  • Basic understanding of bioinformatics pipelines and data formats (e.g. FASTQ BAM).

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105665 comprising base salary within the range of $80869 to $90312 plus 17% superannuation.
