Job Summary

Job Description Summary

The Materials and Processes Engineering (MPE) team develops and evaluates the alloys and material processing for components used in gas turbines steam turbines and generators. There are four subsections within MPE: Material Behavior & Informatics Hot Gas Path & Combustion Coatings Forgings & Structures. The internship will be focused on one of these teams with opportunity for cross-functional projects and learnings.

Job Description

The intern will work with the team to use existing data field experience and test results to further gas turbine materials technology. The intern will run and analyze one or more mechanical test programs. Activities will include evaluating the microstructure and mechanical properties of the component or alloy specifying the processing to achieve the capability desired creating new material behavior curves making material and lifing cards and working with design engineering to establish specification control limits.

The intern will also support an Informatics project which will likely be to develop a surrogate model combining data CALPHAD simulation and crystallographic information to aid in developing methods for next generation thermal barrier coating (TBC) development with physical validation in the MPE-GVL coatings lab via co-precipitation x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry.

Execute mechanical testing program to evaluate the capability of modified material chemistries and produce material and lifing cards to support design analysis. Use machine learning to support new materials development. Evaluate the microstructure and chemistry of alloys under consideration using equipment in the lab. Gain experience working with a diverse team of experts in material science mechanics of materials and materials modeling. Present analysis results to cross-functional and leadership groups.
