Job Summary

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a80% - 100% Nurse Clinician to work for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Our Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is dedicated to bringing world class research and cancer care to Iowa the Midwest and beyond. We rank #47 in the country for Oncology care in the U.S. News & World Report. The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is Iowas only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center and has held that designation since 2000. We also hold accreditations with the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) and the Commission on Cancer (COC).

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Centers Mission Statement is to decrease the pain and suffering caused by cancer in Iowa surrounding communities and around the world through improved cancer prevention and treatment based on three interdependent missions of research clinical service and education. We accomplish this in a multidisciplinary approach where our nursing staff are valued members of the team.

Summary:

  • Functions as a clinical expert and care coordinator for a specific patient population interfacing with administrative clinical nursing staff physicians and patients/families.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with nursing medical staff and other health professionals in the development and review of standards and in planning implementing and evaluating patient care for a specific patient population with regard to the condition and age of the patient. Provides direct nursing care when necessary. Follows universal precautions

  • Independently coordinates and facilitates patient care between multiple disciplines within both the confines of UI Health Care and the local communities (including home health agencies referring physicians and other community support services). Facilitates continuity of care

  • Coordinates patient care to better utilize supportive services through patient visit and possible admission pre-schedules testing follows up with test results to both patient and physician obtains medical history coordinates follow up visit appointment provides medication rehab. teaching etc. Participate in the ongoing management of the patient to facilitate discharge of patient in a timely manner

  • Interacts with staff patients medical staff peers and others in a professional and cooperative manner

  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical expertise consistent with patient population requirements and current nursing and medical practice

  • Develops management and consultant skills consistent with position responsibilities

  • Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information

  • Promotes a positive work environment

  • Demonstrates the core values of service leadership: respect communication accountability integrity and compassion

  • Remains calm and constructive in conflict situations listens and attempts to understand other points of view

  • Analyzes own performance in accordance with position expectations develops goals and implements a plan to meet goals

  • Is self-directed in using time

Percent of time: 80% -100%
Schedule: Monday-Friday flexible hours between 0700-1800. 8 9 or 10 hour shifts available (potential for a day off each week) No weekends No holidays.
Salary: $64242minimumat 100% effort to commensurate. Salary will be based on years of experience and percent effort.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire

  • Demonstrated experience in patient education is required

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills critical thinking and problem solving skills are required

  • Demonstrated expertise with adult patient/family discharge planning process is required

  • Experience working with an interdisciplinary team is required

  • Must be able to work well in a team is a valuable skill

Desired Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in nursing is desired
  • Reasonable (within the last 1 year) oncology nursing experience is preferred
