The NYPD is seeking a qualified experienced candidate to fill the role of Chief Chaplain. The Chief Chaplain oversees the Departments Chaplains Unit which provides spiritual guidance to members of the service and their addition the Unit also officiates at various Department functions and visits hospitalized members of the service and/or members recovering with serious injuries or illnesses at home. The Chief Chaplain provides essential spiritual emotional and ethical support to officers staff and their families. The position involves both administrative and frontline duties in a high-stress environment.
Key Responsibilities: The Chief Chaplain is a deeply involved spiritual mentor and ethicist who has these key responsibilities:
-Pastoral Care and Counseling: Offering confidential non-judgmental spiritual and personal counseling for a diverse workforce regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.
-Crisis Response: Responding to critical incidents such as line-of-duty deaths officer-involved shootings suicides and other traumatic events to support emotional and spiritual recovery.
-Death Notifications: Accompanying officers to make death notifications to next of kin providing immediate comfort and support to grieving families.
-Officer Wellness: Promoting overall well-being including offering training on stress management burnout and ethical decision-making.
-Ceremonial Duties: Performing invocations benedictions funerals memorial services and leading prayers at official department events like graduations and award ceremonies.
-Liaison and Outreach: Serving as a bridge between the police department and various community faith leaders and groups.
-Ministry of Presence: Building trust and rapport by being consistently available which often includes going on patrol ride-alongs and visiting officers in police facilities hospitals or their homes if they are sick or injured.
-Advising Leadership: Offering guidance to the Chief of Police or Sheriff on matters of a religious or moral nature that may impact department operations or community relations.

Ecclesiastical endorsement by the official endorsing agency of the candidates faith or denomination and by the Committee on Chaplaincies.
