Job Summary:The Academic Advisor I provides guidance to University students on academic progress courses University resources etc. Identifies courses to be completed in upcoming semesters. Explains University and College policies. May teach compass course as needed.
Additional Department Summary:Advises undergraduate students with academic schedules registration and degree progress issues. Meets with prospective students and parents providing guidance and information on the college its majors campus life student involvement etc. Provides assistance with new student orientation. Represents the college at recruiting events.
Required Minimum Qualifications:Bachelors degree or higher.
Skills and Knowledge:Demonstrate sensitivity to needs of a population from various backgrounds. Excellent oral and written communication skills including public speaking skills. Advising with a focus on exploration adjustment and student success. Ability to interpret student needs and determine appropriate recommendations and referrals. Knowledge of the theory principles and practices related to academic advising or ability to gain knowledge in these areas. Ability to collaborate with campus partners. Computer skills to include word processing spreadsheet and/or database management. Good planning coordinating and organizing skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications:Masters degree preferred due to the responsibilities of this position. Relevant experience with Banner and DegreeWorks are highly desired.
