Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Clarkson University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in environmental engineering. While individuals qualified for appointment as full professor are of particular interest outstanding mid-career candidates with a record of research excellence and leadership potential are also strongly encouraged to apply. The anticipated start date is August 2026. For full consideration applications should be received by January 15 2026.

We seek exceptional candidates whose scholarship and teaching strengthen the core areas of Environmental Engineering within the Department. The individual hired will be expected to sustain a nationally recognized externally funded research program that complements existing research strengths of the University. Applicants with expertise in any of the following broad or emerging areas are encouraged to apply:


air quality human exposure and air pollution control technology development
atmospheric sciences and engineering
emerging chemical and biological pollutant detection fate and transport and removal technology development
environmental systems / ecosystems modeling and technology impact assessment
resource recovery and circular economy technology development
synthesis and characterization of advanced materials and value-added chemicals
water quality human exposure and water pollution control technology development.

Clarkson University is New York States highest-ranked small research institution. The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering hosts BS MS and PhD degrees in civil and environmental engineering is Clarksons second-largest department by enrollment and leads in university-wide research recent years CEE assistant professors have been awarded major early career grants including two NSF CAREER awards and three NSF Engineering Research Initiation (ERI) awards. The six environmental engineering faculty generate approximately $4M/year in research expenditures from externally funded grants and contracts. The individual hired will have a similarly strong record of accomplishment securing external funding and mentoring graduate students commensurate of their rank. The person will contribute to the Departments educational mission through innovative and effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This individual will find opportunities within Clarksons active research and education ecosystem. Examples of relevance to the position include but are not limited to Clarkson Universitys:

Center for Air & Aquatic Resources Engineering & Sciences (CAARES) the analytical core of environmental research - home to state-of-the-art instrumentation and DoD ELAPaccredited PFAS analyses.


Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions (HWS) which is co-led by Clarkson University and SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (ESF) in New York State mobilizes interdisciplinary research industry partnerships and community engagement to advance water quality ecosystem resilience and green manufacturing. With an annual economic impact of more than $8 million the Center engages more than 60 faculty members to tackle emerging environmental challenges.


Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) one of 15 Centers for Advanced Technology (CAT) funded by New York State to encourage greater collaboration between private industry and universities in the development and application of new technologies. CAMP faculty are leaders in the development characterization and application of advanced materials and materials processing including polymers thin films smart/responsive materials plasma processing water remediation technologies composites and particle/colloid science. Current partnerships range from large multinationals to small start-ups.


Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE) which drives campus-wide environmental and sustainability education research outreach and sustainability efforts and is an interdisciplinary hub for integrated education and research initiatives across Clarksons schools and research centers. ISE hosts interdisciplinary BS MS and PhD programs in environmental science engineering and policy that incorporate natural and social sciences with a technology focus.

At the ranks of associate or full professor the individual hired would ideally provide leadership within one or more of these active research centers and contribute to shaping strategic directions in environmental research and education at Clarkson.

Clarkson Universitys Potsdam New York campus is located within the transition region between the St. Lawrence River Valley and the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Clarksons Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is a vibrant community of diverse teacher-scholars working toward the common goal of Technology Serving Humanity. Clarkson is currently undergoing a major investment in the future with the recently-announced Ken 71 and Grace Solinsky Engineering Leadership Challenge focusing on advanced manufacturing. The Solinskys $32M financial commitment to the Challenge represents the largest directed gift in the history of Clarkson University. The Solinsky Challenge will result in an $80M investment in engineering over seven-years including an anticipated $48M expansion and renovation of the engineering building into the Solinsky Engineering Center and a portfolio of advanced manufacturing initiatives. New faculty will have the opportunity to engage with the Solinsky Engineering Leadership Challenge to advance innovation in sustainable manufacturing materials design and environmental systems engineering.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in Civil Engineering Environmental Engineering or a closely related field (degree must be conferred by the time work commences)
Record of scholarly publications in top-tier journals commensurate with rank
Demonstrated ability and strong potential to attract competitive research funding
Strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
Effective communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license
Record of successful external funding from competitive programs
Evidence of effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level
Experience in leading research centers or managing shared research facilities.

Essential Skills
