Description

Medical Oncology is one of two comparably sized academic divisions in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology. Seventy (70) clinical and basic science faculty members (plus 5 imminent signees) comprise several programs/sections including Breast Gastrointestinal Thoracic Genito-urinary Head and Neck Sarcoma Neuro-Oncology and Melanoma. Kevin Kalinsky MD MS FASCO serves as Division Director.


In FY2025 members of the Division of Medical Oncology secured/continued over $32 million in total clinical (56%) and other/basic (44%) annual research award dollars of which $12.4 million was federally funded.

Physicians in the Division along with advanced practitioners were responsible in FY2025 for almost 80000 direct encounters with Emory Healthcare patients across three locations and approximately 10000 patient encounters in the Grady Health System. The Division supports inpatient attending services at Emory University Hospital (EUH) and Emory U. Hospital Midtown (EUHM) with a combined average census of approx. 75 patients also a distinct inpatient consult service at Grady Hospital all of which are supported by advanced practitioners and also provide training opportunities for residents and Hem/Onc fellows.


In addition to nationally and internationally recognized comprehensive programs in various tumor types the Division includes multiple highly specialized and defined programs in patient care and research. The Division is continually working with leaders in the Department and the Winship Cancer Institute to develop appropriate programs and services including chiefly Winship at Emory Midtown a groundbreaking new facility open since May 2023.

The Administrator will execute the above job description for Medical addition to the stated responsibilities (budget faculty affairs research administration staff oversight/supervision etc.) the Administrator will support and lead the medical practice(s) comprised of physician faculty members in the Division and advanced practice partners with regard to strategy planning activity/productivity/utilization patient satisfaction financial performance compensation compliance etc.


The Administrator will report directly to the Senior Administrator for the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology. They will work very closely with the (faculty) Director of the Division of Medical Oncology as well as with administrative and nursing leaders in several closely-associated Emory Healthcare hospital outpatient clinics. Additionally the Administrator will work with leaders in the Winship Cancer Institute the School of Medicine Emory Clinic and Emory Healthcare and with shared services such as finance HR research administration patient access and revenue cycle management.

An office will be available on the Clifton Road campus with the expectation of periodic regular travel to meetings at other metro Atlanta locations as appropriate and necessary.

Competitive candidates will be able to relate support and engage faculty members in the three missions of the health sciences (scholarship teaching and service). They will organize and lead support staff and also possess excellent skills in communication and analysis/financial management.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans coordinates and is responsible for major administrative and clinical activities including grants and contracts budget planning financial analysis data processing operations and human resources management for at least one department or major division with multiple locations and at least one health system partner (e.g. Emory Healthcare).
  • Serves as an autonomous leader with departmental decision-making authority including overall budget development and leadership presentation and responsibility including grant funding.
  • Works with departmental leadership to develop administer and monitor the capital equipment operations and personnel budgets.
  • Develops plans to ensure that generated clinical revenues increase each year while limiting expenses.
  • Works with Department Chair to establish goals and objectives for the department(s); monitors progress towards their achievement.
  • Develops and implements various clinical and administrative programs to enhance employees skills and to improve the effectiveness of existing clinical services.
  • Develops new programs to ensure the growth of the department and to meet the changing demands for new services.
  • Acts as a liaison between management and other schools/departments concerning clinical activities and issues.
  • Ensures required record-keeping is maintained.
  • Develops and implements formal training and development programs for staff.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

Note: Administrators within the Basic Sciences oversee at least two Basic Science Departments with associated employee supervision. Basic Science Administrators may have responsibility for multiple locations and/or School of Medicine academic affiliations (e.g. Georgia Tech).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree preferably in business finance or related science field and seven years of professional business or management experience which includes experience in a clinical or healthcare environment OR an equivalent combination of experience education and training.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
