About the Position

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has a vacancy for an Engineer-in-Training I in our Bridge Asset Management Unit. This position performs entry-level structural engineering and data analysis under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer. The role learns to assist in applying foundational engineering principles to support the maintenance and improvement of CDOTs bridge asset management systems data and processes. The position performs basic engineering calculations and data analysis supports the implementation of asset management initiatives and contributes technical support for the structure data systems used in infrastructure planning. This role will support the oversight of database systems and learn the application of structural engineering in preservation planning and data analysis. The position may assist with guiding technical work for less experienced staff or interns.


Your duties and responsibilitieswill include but are not limited to the following:

This Engineer-in-Training I position performs entry-level structural engineering and data analysis under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer.
  • Using foundational engineering principles assist in preparing and documenting electronic tools and computations to be used by this position and others to manage the structure databases and electronic records and facilitate analysis data entry quality control reporting and accessibility.
  • Assist in ensuring the protection and integrity of the databases by arranging for regular backups and by applying established database management practices.
  • Learns to assist in the application of structural engineering theories and practices to develop recommendations for appropriate bridge planned preventative maintenance and capital construction actions to most cost-effectively maintain the Departments structures.

  • Learns to assist with developing tools and processes that utilize structure records to aid in cost-effective structural preservation actions.

  • Upon request provides Department employees with data to assist their decision-making at the structure and system levels.

  • Provides input to data-driven decisions at both the structure and system level to aid in the improvement and longevity of CDOTs structures.

  • Learns to assist in the determination and reporting of Colorado element and structural deterioration curves based on available data.

  • Assists in updating and maintaining the databases for current structure funding allocation and budgeting for both on-system and off-system structures.

  • Provide information to staff on current policies and methods that are used to project conditions and evaluate preservation actions.

  • Assist with conducting and verifying statewide and regional condition projection scenarios and funding scenarios.

  • Researches and compiles information on the structural asset management practices of other DOTs to support recommendations for improvements.

  • Prepares drafts of standard reports and SIMSA forms for use by others.

  • Gain familiarity with the operation of SIMSA and other structure management software from the general to the specific.

  • Obtains information from CDOT data repositories (BrM SIMSA SAP DTD ProjectWise etc.) and learns to interpret the information.

  • Learns to present and make available any results of analysis to other Department employees other technical professionals and the public as determined appropriate.

  • Learns to assist in developing and delivering training and documentation for internal and external users of the bridge asset systems.

  • Attends and participates in industry conferences and working groups focused on asset management.

  • Reads industry publications and attends training seminars and presentations to gain and maintain an understanding of new structural asset management software applications practices and research.

  • Cross-trains in the Bridge Inspection and Design Units and assists the bridge inspection program and design teams.

  • Assists in maintaining and documenting bridge asset management standards and documentation including updates to the Bridge Asset Management Manual.

  • Prepares draft engineering recommendations for updates based on system and process changes for review.

  • Contributes to internal initiatives to streamline the delivery of bridge performance and condition information.

  • Supports the management of the Staff Bridge Web presence shared folders and servers.

  • Supports bridge inspectors with inspections of in-service bridges and reporting.

  • Drives to project sites to assist in inspections.

  • Other job duties as assigned.


Work Environment:
  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am 5:00 pm work hours Monday-Friday with the opportunity for a flexible schedule
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field 90% spent in the office
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications Substitutions Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or engineering technology preferably civil engineering. We will accept applications from December 2025 and Spring 2026 graduates.
Substitution:
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors ORCurrent enrollment as a licensed Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may substitute.

  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training I must obtain enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors hereafter referred to as the Board within three years of appointment to the position. Individuals must also obtain licensure as a professional engineer by the Board within eight years of appointment to the position.


Preferred Qualifications

Theexceptional applicantbe a licensed Professional Engineer with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:

  • Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and registered as an Engineer Intern with the State of Colorado or the ability to pass within 12 months of hire.

  • Knowledge and experience with the AASHTO Civil and Structural Design Specifications.
