You lead support and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts. As an Engineering Director you guide your team to complete production work on projects. You participate in business development. About our Austin Team
Since 2017 a team of Toole Design engineers have provided full-time on-site staff augmentation to the City of Austins Transportation and Public Works Department to deliver Mobility Bond projects focusing on bikeway pedestrian and transit related infrastructure. The contract supports many of the City departments including Bikeways Safe Routes to School Sidewalk and Urban Trails Speed Management Vision Zero and Transit Enhancement work in partnership with the Capital Metro Transportation Authority. Our vision for the Austin staff augmentation team is one that is talented multidisciplinary diverse and cohesive. This position is part of our full-time on-site staff augmentation contract we have with the City of Austins Transportation Department.

Qualifications of an Engineering Director
U.S. or Canadian professional engineering License
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or related
Seven or more years of experience in the job offered or as a Civil Engineering Professional

Job Duties:
Coordinate work between disciplines and offices to support projects
Apply comprehensive knowledge of transportation engineering fundamentals to develop practical customized solutions in challenging environments
Understand the process of preparing construction documents (plans specifications and cost estimates) and securing local agency permits
Keep abreast of new methods and developments within the firms practice areas and recommend new practices or changes to existing practices in keeping with industry trends
Serve in an outward-facing role within the transportation industry proactively promoting new practices and technologies developed by the firm and providing technical guidance on their application
Lead technical presentations of the firms work at conferences
Serve on company practice area committees
Manage multiple projects and/or technical tasks including large and complex projects with unique technical challenges and the need to coordinate numerous parallel tracks of work
Assist in the production of work to support the team
Develop a deep understanding of transportation engineering related requirements (MUTCD HCM HSM AASHTO etc.)
Manage and mentor staff: including set goals complete performance reviews conduct regular check-ins; advise on merit increases bonuses and promotions and discipline and terminate staff when necessary in coordination with HR and firm leadership
Facilitate training for other employees clients agency staff and professional organizations
Manage firm and project resources in an organized manner to ensure successful completion of projects to clients satisfaction
Manage develop monitor and maintain budgets and schedules and prepare client invoices
Develop work plans including revision acceleration or deceleration of a project
Meet internal and external deadlines (including timesheet submittal expense submittal invoice preparation proposal preparation and managing projects within Toole Designs accounting system)
Represent the firm and market Toole Design expertise to identify project leads by maintaining relationships with clients and potential clients
Serve as the technical lead for proposal pursuits and participate in shortlist interviews; serve as a final reviewer of proposals created by others
Analyze assess and present transportation safety and/or design data to recommend roadway design or operational changes for corridors intersections road safety audits or multimodal plans
Apply analytical modeling and simulation skills and knowledge of multimodal best practices and latest countermeasure research to support multimodal transportation and safety analysis
Actively engage in developing specialized knowledge or skills within the firms areas of expertise
Develop construction documents (plans specifications and cost estimates) for pavement marking and signage projects maintenance of traffic and rapid implementation projects following industry best practices and design guidance
Manage or lead the design of traffic signal lighting or rapid implementation projects in coordination with the Civil Practice
Independently design and complete tasks or small to mid-size projects with general direction from senior staff
Direct and oversee the production of work products by in-house staff and subconsultants to ensure they are accurate and complete managing staff assignments as needed
Apply engineering judgment to a broad spectrum of activities with support from senior engineers
Use discretion and make decisions based on sound logic and good business judgment
Acquire general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields and function in multidisciplinary teams
Deliver work that is error-free taking personal responsibility for accuracy
Perform independent quality control reviews within areas of competence ensuring work products follow Toole Designs quality control procedures
