About the Division of Water Resources (DWR):
- The Division Water Resources is responsible for managing protecting and enhancing the quality of the states water resources for all Tennesseans through voluntary regulatory and educational programs. Division activities include establishment of water quality criteria; issuance of permits and certifications; evaluation of monitoring data; conducting inspections; management of financial assistance for infrastructure and oversight activities related to stream channel modification wetland alterations dredging groundwater protection wellhead protection safe dams septic systems pretreatment bio solids application and storm water.
Other Requirements:
- Necessary Special Quali cations: Applicants for this class must: Possess a valid motor vehicle operators license at the time of appointment in some positions; Applicants for the TDEC Environmental Scientist 1* or Health Physicist 1* in the Division of Radiological Health must successfully complete the training courses offered by the Division of Radiological Health. Failure to do so may result in termination; TDEC Environmental Scientists 1* performing geologic duties the major portion of their time must: have completed the required college course work at the time of appointment to be eligible to take the licensing examination offered by Tennessees Department of Commerce and Insurances Board of Professional Geologists or b.) hold and maintain a current Geologic license from the State of Tennessee during employment or hold a current Geologic license from another State that Tennessee has evaluated and granted reciprocal licensing rights; Some TDEC Environmental Scientist 1* positions assigned to function as Biologists must meet the speci c educational requirements for Biologists as follows: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelors degree including at least 36 quarter hours (or 24 semester hours) in biology in one of the following areas: (1) biology or biological sciences (2) botanical sciences (3) environmental or conservation sciences (4) zoological sciences or (5) aquatic terrestrial or wetland biology or ecology or other acceptable biological science related eld. - Looking for an opportunity to work with a collaborative diverse team in Tennessee State government Interested in protecting our environment public health and water quality The Division of Water Resources has a position in our Jackson Environmental Field Office (EFO) working with our great team as well as with other EFO staff and directly with the regulated community in a multi county area. The position will primarily be responsible for collecting chemical and biological samples of surface waters and performing sanitary surveys of public water systems.
- We are seeking a candidate who practices excellent customer service and can effectively communicate with a diverse internal and external customer base. Preferred candidates will possess strong time management and organizational skills. The position requires fieldwork in rural areas construction sites and in all weather conditions and frequent day travel. Preferred bachelors degrees include engineering agronomy biology physical sciences or other related environmental science fields.
Highlighted Responsibilities Include:
- Acquire and maintain a working knowledge of rules governing Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems and State Operating Permits
- Read and interpret maps provide guidance and create diagrams
- Write and review technical reports and inspections documents.
- Apply rules and regulations to a variety of compliance situations.
- Maintain digital permit files records and reports.
- Operate a state vehicle and drive to remote sites to perform inspections.
- Ability to communicate with varied individuals or customers
- Collecting chemical bacteriological and biological samples of surface waters for analysis to assess stream health.
- Conduct sanitary surveys of community and non-community public water systems to ensure compliance with federal and state drinking water standards.
- Serve as a knowledgeable point of contact for public water system operators landowners and local stakeholders providing guidance on regulatory requirements and compliance.
- Travel regularly to monitoring sites and public water systems across a 17-county service area using a state-provided vehicle.
- Accurately document field findings maintain organized records and input data into digital systems.
- Participate in occasional investigations related to illegal discharges surface water quality concerns or public water drinking water complaints.
- Collaborate with internal regulatory teams consultants water system operators elected officials and members of the public to resolve issues and support environmental goals.
