The Chemistry department is committed to quality teaching and enjoys a cohesive mutually supportive atmosphere. The students that return after achieving their educational and vocational goals tell us that our preparation is more than sufficient. Many of our transfer students often do better at four-year colleges than students native to those institutions. The Chemistry Instructor will have the primary responsibility for lecture and laboratory instruction in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry and General Chemistry. The assignment may also include other courses in the discipline including Introductory General Chemistry and Analytical Instrumentation. Our continuing goal is to always remain student-centered without sacrificing academic rigor. Maintaining high academic standards is critical to the continued success of our students and is therefore important to each and every faculty member.
Desirable Qualifications
Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with extensive experience teaching in the primary subject area. Experience teaching distance education courses using Moodle or other distance education learning management systems. Experience in the use of various instructional technologies to teach both face-to-face and online courses. Evidence of strong commitment to professional growth and development and to the continued innovation and improvement of teaching. Knowledgeable in laboratory instrumentations especially using GC HPLC UV IR and NMR . Ability and willingness to teach a wide range of classes as schedules and institutional commitments require. Must have willingness to maintain currency in chemistry and the ability to focus on learner-centeredness. Demonstrated knowledge in current teaching practices including assessment of learning outcomes. Evidence of effective use of technology both in the classroom and the laboratory. Evidence of commitment to collegial participation in departmental college and discipline-specific professional activities. Ability to explain discipline-specific concepts in a clear logical and concise fashion; interact effectively with students peers and administrative personnel; work independently to solve problems; recognize variation in student backgrounds abilities and learning styles; be patient with students; maintain integrity honesty reliability and cooperation. Excellent communication skills both oral and written skills
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or biochemistry; OR 2. Possession of a Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemistry or biochemistry; AND Possession of a Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Biochemistry Chemical engineering Chemical Physics Physics Molecular Biology or Geochemistry or the equivalent; OR 3. May submit a fully satisfied lifetime California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing service to teach courses in Chemistry. (California credentials were no longer issued after July 1 1990). OR 4. The equivalent qualifications. (Candidates who claim equivalency must provide conclusive evidence as clear and reliable on the college transcripts as required on the District Equivalency Application Form. Refer to the Equivalency Procedures below. This is not a process to waive the minimum qualifications.) 5. Applicant must have demonstrated cultural competency sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic cultural disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college staff faculty and students
