Job Summary

Are you a practical organised and proactive individual looking to support teaching and learning within a thriving Design & Technology department A successful and forward-thinking secondary school in Ipswich is seeking a Design & Technology Technician to join their department from January. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on technical work values a structured workshop environment and wants to play a key role in helping students bring creative ideas to life.

About the Role

As the DT Technician you will work closely with teachers across Product Design Resistant Materials Engineering and Graphics to ensure that practical lessons run safely efficiently and to a high standard. You will be responsible for preparing maintaining and storing a wide range of materials and equipment used in day-to-day lessons coursework projects and extracurricular activities.

Key duties include:

  • Preparing tools materials and resources for KS3KS4 practical lessons

  • Ensuring all workshop machinery is maintained and safe to use (after appropriate training if required)

  • Supporting students during practical tasks by providing guidance on safe tool use and correct procedures

  • Maintaining stock levels organising ordering and monitoring usage of consumables

  • Managing the safe storage and handling of tools adhesives metals woods plastics textiles and general workshop equipment

  • Supporting staff with CAD/CAM resources including laser cutters 3D printers and CNC equipment

  • Helping with displays coursework preparation and the organisation of student project work

  • Ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety policies including carrying out regular risk assessments and maintaining a clean organised workspace

This role is ideal for someone who is practical positive and capable of managing both routine and more complex workshop tasks with confidence.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Practical experience in workshop environments or similar technical roles

  • Confidence using tools machinery and manual equipment (training provided where needed)

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail

  • A positive proactive approach to teamwork and student support

  • A good understanding of Health & Safety requirements or willingness to undertake training
