Job Summary

To execute strategic recruitment programs and advising services for secondary and post-secondary school students parents educational advocates and counsellors in Canada for the purpose of encouraging qualified prospective students to seek admission to UBC. Advise students with secondary and post-secondary credentials concerning UBC admission criteria and specific program requirements for admission to UBC undergraduate programs on both campuses. Support the advancement of Indigenous peoples human rights and UBCs commitment to reconciliation as articulated and called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Foster access success and representation at UBC of historically underserved marginalized or excluded populations.

This position is located on the Vancouver campus of UBC and will require a presence at this location.


Organizational Status

Associate Student Recruiter-Advisors report to the Associate Director Student Recruitment & Advising. The position works closely in collaboration with: (a) Student Recruiter-Advisors Recruitment Marketing Prospective Student Engagement and Admissions staff on the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses of UBC (b) other staff in UBC Enrolment Services and (c) other on-campus units (i.e. Faculties First Nations House of Learning Indigenous Programs and Services The Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program Centre for Accessibility International Student Initiative) to support the recruitment advising admission and successful transition of students to UBC.



Work Performed

1. Represents UBC with an accurate inclusive and strategic approach to prospective high school students parents and counsellors through visits to secondary schools and colleges by:

  • Delivering UBC recruitment presentations in small and large group settings using multimedia materials and other collateral

  • Building strong relationships and trust with institutions community organizations and individuals through effective and inclusive communication with students parents educational advocates and counsellors in presentation settings one-on-one advising telephone inquiries email correspondence social media and online sessions.

  • Sharing UBCs commitment to inclusive excellence and the resources available to empower students to achieve their educational goals

2. Advise prospective students by:

  • Providing information on all aspects of academic program options application admission registration housing awards and financial assistance extracurricular activities campus resources and orientation to UBC.

  • Appling knowledge and understanding of complex requirements and policies in making appropriate responses and offer advice based on individual assessment of each situation.

  • Representing UBCs welcoming community and positive engagement with all students particularly those from systemically marginalized communities

3. Contributes to the development and delivery of programs with the guidance and support of the Associate Director and Student Recruiter-Advisors by:

  • Providing support for students throughout the admission registration and transition process.

  • Developing planning and executing strategic special events on and off campus which involves event designing promotion facility logistics liaising with external partners coordinating the involvement of staff / faculty training and supervising student assistants and post-event evaluation.

  • Initiating and undertaking prospective student follow-up (on both an individual and group basis).

  • Assisting in the development and delivery of strategic communication planning for prospective students with a focus on inclusive messaging.

4. Undertakes additional student recruitment and advising activities as required.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

Our goal is to support and enhance the participation and success of students from systemically marginalized communities at our two UBC campuses with a priority on the advancement of Indigenous peoples human rights. Ineffective work will result in the failure of the University to meet goals set out in the University Strategic Plan (Shaping UBCs Next Century) the Inclusion Action Plan the Indigenous Strategic Plan the Beyond Tomorrow Scholars Program and the Student Recruitment and Advising Strategic Plan. Ineffective work could damage the relations of UBC and trust with key communities and organizations.

This position is responsible for providing effective recruitment services and delivering accurate information about admission to the Universitys undergraduate programs with the aim of meeting the universitys enrolment goals for our Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. Advising students counselors and others incorrectly could have serious and costly consequently for the prospective student.


Supervision Received

Associate Student Recruiter-Advisors report to the Associate Director Student Recruitment & Advising. Works closely and cooperatively with Student Recruiter-Advisors as well as other staff in Enrolment Services to meet the goals and objectives of the unit. Exercises initiative diplomacy inclusiveness resourcefulness and sound judgement when representing the University. Must demonstrate cross-cultural competency and intercultural skills when advising prospective students with different cultural backgrounds. Must employ an inclusive and respectful approach in interactions with prospective students and parents with counselors and institutional representatives as well as faculty and staff at UBC.

Qualifications
- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own
- Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion

Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years relevant experience working with students in a post-secondary institution or community organization preferably in a role specific to increasing accessibility of education amongst students fromhistorically persistently or systemically marginalizedcommunities. Program management experience that emphasizes strong communication organization and time-management skills. Demonstrate cross-cultural competency and excellent interpersonal skills. Good organizational and administrative skill. Ability to work inclusively and respectfully with all levels of the external and internal UBC community. Must hold a valid BC drivers license and have access to a vehicle. Must be willing to travel extensively (primarily within Canada). Open to working evenings and weekends.
