The Interdisciplinary Science (IS) Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate for a one-year appointment with an opportunity for renewal to perform research using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) with a focus on large language models (LLMs) and foundation models (FMs) relevant to electric power systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for power system planning operation control and cybersecurity with a particular focus on grid applications of large language models (LLMs) and foundation models (FMs) to ensure the energy security and operational reliability of electric power systems.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Ph.D. in Computer Science Electrical Engineering Mathematics Physics or a related field with a strong foundation in artificial intelligence and machine learning particularly in LLMs and FMs
• Demonstrated ability to leverage LLM and/or FM in advanced technical areas
• Experience with/knowledge of modeling complex engineering systems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to take direction effectively and collaborate within interdisciplinary project teams

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of/experience with modeling simulation dynamics and control of complex systems such as power grids
• Knowledge of/experience in energy systems including familiarity with commonly used tools frameworks cybersecurity and best practices

Additional Information:

• BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position excluding time associated with family planning military service illness or other life-changing events.
• Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $70200 - $85000. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidates qualification education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
