The Research Scientist in Network Science and Complex Dynamic Systems is part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) within the School of Engineering at Vanderbilt University. This person is responsible for conducting advanced ground-breaking research in all areas of network science complex dynamic systems machine learning and graph theory. A person in this position is expected to supervise and contribute to the success of sponsored research projects. Reporting directly to the Professor this individual conducts advanced ground-breaking research and serves as a functional lead on a team of researchers composed of post-docs and graduate and undergraduate students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Directly contributes to the technical mission(s) of CEE and its sponsors through activities including analysis modeling testing design activities and publication of research results
Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to reach desired project outcomes
Provides leadership and direction to team members
Maintains familiarity with emerging knowledge and techniques relevant to CEE research discipline(s)
Functionally oversees work of research staff and graduate students
Maximizes effectiveness efficiency and communication with partners.
Maintains proficiency in EPA LEAF methods on environmental materials and applicable QA-QC measures on analytical instrumentation to ensure consistency of work performance.
Other tasks as assigned.
Supervisory Relationships: This position does not have supervisory responsibility and reports administratively and functionally to the research Principal Investigator.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related field is required.
Experience as a post-doc is preferred.
3 years of experience in scripting languages (e.g. Python MATLAB)
Technical and mathematical expertise in network science complex dynamic systems machine learning graph theory probabilistic modeling
Systems engineering experience working across disciplines
Strong written and oral communication skills technical reports published articles presentations
Strong project management skills
Strong technical skills to help deliver an end-to-end functioning system that accomplishes research goals
