About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for two Regular Part-Time Laboratory Assistants to join our dynamic team.

TheLaboratoryteam is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by processing the whole blood collections to the final product and the distribution of these products to the customers of Canadian Blood this role you will be working on the frontlines assisting in the production of blood components that provide life-saving treatments for Canadians.

Formula for success

  • Drawing on your knowledge and experience in laboratory functions you will be processing blood components such as from apheresis donations
  • Utilizing your knowledge and understanding of blood component production you will be issuing blood products to Public Health and outside agencies for Quality Control as well as issueblood and related products to our customers such as Provincial Hospitals and other blood centres etc
  • Using your excellent organizational skills you will be maintaining stock of supplies in component laboratory including fractionation products red blood cells and platelets
  • Using your attention to detail you will be involved in the maintenance of appropriate documentation and records related to inventory in compliance with Canadian Blood Services operational procedures and work instructions.
  • Applying your ability to be proactive and ensure excellence you will be performing routine maintenance of equipment and work areas to ensure safety and quality of blood products and maintaining temperature records of laboratory equipment.

Desired education and skills

  • Grade 12 plus one year of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education training and experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff volunteers donors and the general public
  • Ability to deal effectively other departments
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the job
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment
  • Ability to organize work

What you can expect

  • Training will be Monday-Friday day shift for the first few weeks (0700-1500 or 0800-1600 depending on the week) and then shift work after that (evenings/weekends).
  • The schdeule will be days and evenings 7 days a week 0600-23:30 rotational on call.
  • Physical requirements for the role include the ability to lift weights up to 10 kg (22 lbs).
