The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides mandated clinical services public health initiatives chronic disease management reproductive health care and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. Physicians in OSH also review medical accommodations respond to public health emergencies and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Under the supervision of the Medical Director the CMS I (Pediatric Pulmonologist) will:
-Develop manage and implement asthma-related clinical policies and protocols.
-Provide expert consultation and case management support to OSH physicians and nurses for students with poorly controlled asthma.
-Support in-school asthma management to reduce absenteeism and emergency room visits.
- Review medical accommodations to ensure safe school attendance for students with asthma.
-Train and educate OSH staff school personnel and parents on asthma best practices.
-Collaborate with pediatric pulmonologists hospitals and providers citywide to improve care coordination.
-Monitor asthma disparities and lead initiatives to advance health equity
-Conduct asthma-related research and lead quality improvement initiatives contributing to evidence-based school health practices and program evaluation.
-Support responses to environmental and respiratory-related emergencies in schools.
-Attend mandated OSH/DOHMH trainings and program meetings.

CITY MEDICAL SPECIALIST (PART
Qualifications :
Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and either:
a) Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or
b) Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
To be assigned to Assignment Level II individuals must have in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements for Assignment Level I described above one year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area.
To be assigned to Assignment Level III individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) A Masters degree in Public Health or equivalent Masters degree including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Masters degree; and
c) At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Masters degree or equivalent in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience.
To be assigned to Assignment Level IV individuals must possess:
a) A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York; and
b) Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital including three years of experience in either internal medicine or family practice or pediatrics or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene; and
c) Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease Pulmonary Medicine or a related subspecialty; and
d) Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital including two years of experience in either infectious diseases or pulmonary medicine or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
