- The Steering Controls Developer is responsible for designing developing and validating software and control systems for heavy equipment steering.
- This role focuses on implementing advanced and autonomous steering features to enhance machine performance safety and operator experience.
- The developer will utilize advanced modeling and simulation tools test on-machine and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to bring innovative solutions from concept to production.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop innovative control algorithms and embedded software for electro-hydraulic and other steering systems. This includes autonomous operator-assist (such as Steer Assist for dozers and Auto Articulation for motor graders) and remote-control steering functionalities.
- Integrate steering control software with other machine control systems including hydraulics power systems and user interfaces.
- Tune and calibrate control algorithms on test machines to optimize steering performance maneuverability and efficiency at proving grounds and customer job sites.
- Use model-based development tools like MATLAB/Simulink to create test and verify control system algorithms before hardware implementation.
- Plan and perform on-machine and bench-level verification and validation using data acquisition tools such as CANape.
- Gather and define system requirements by working with customers operators and engineering teams to ensure control solutions meet performance and safety targets.
- Lead the troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues encountered during development and in the field.
- Collaborate with a global cross-functional team of engineers and potentially mentor junior engineers.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in electrical Mechatronics or Computer Engineering. A Masters degree is a plus.
- Experience with embedded control system development and testing preferably in off-highway automotive or similar industries.
- Proficiency with model-based development tools specifically MATLAB/Simulink.
- Solid understanding of electrical electronic and hydraulic systems particularly electro-hydraulic controls.
- Strong analytical and technical troubleshooting skills to diagnose complex system problems.
- Experience with heavy equipment operation and an understanding of operator needs in various applications.
- Knowledge of vehicle dynamics and control theory as applied to steering systems.
- Familiarity with data communication protocols like CAN bus.
- Experience with functional safety standards related to machinery.
