Description

The Department of Public Works Fleet Maintenance Division is looking for an experienced Automotive/Equipment Mechanic to perform journeyman-level maintenance diagnostic and repair work and related technical duties on a wide variety of the Citys gasoline and diesel-powered automotive construction mechanical and other power-driven or specialized equipment. You will be joining a hard-working team that helps support all critical City operations and ensures that the Citys vehicle and equipment needs are met by a fleet of safe and well-maintained vehicles.

Must have at least two years of skilled experience in repairing automotive and power-driven equipment or have completed an approved mechanical apprenticeship program. Candidates with additional directly relevant experience and the ability to demonstrate proficiency in meeting required skill levels are eligible to be hired at the Mechanic II or Mechanic III level position. You must be hard-working dependable responsible punctual and safety conscious; able to deliver excellent customer service with a positive attitude; and able to work cooperatively with others and contribute to a successful team effort.

40 hours per week 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some evening weekend and holiday work may be required. The salary range ($49388 to $93323) represents the earning potential for this position. Starting salary is negotiable within the salary range depending on knowledge qualifications training certifications experience and skills proficiency. Job Functions

What you will do with us:

  • Service maintain and repair City vehicles including automobiles trucks construction equipment buses and other specialized equipment and related systems; preventive maintenance may include but is not limited to lubrication oil changes replacement of worn parts valve adjustments engine tune-ups compression tests emission control system tests and adjustments and brake adjustments.
  • Diagnose problems with vehicles/equipment and make repairs as needed.
  • Basic tear downs and rebuilds of components and assemblies of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles.
  • Perform basic road/performance tests on vehicles and equipment; perform road service when necessary.
  • Keep accurate fleet maintenance records including dates of service repairs made parts/materials used and recommended future service.
  • Service maintain and repair power lawn mowers tractors chain saws weed eaters small pumps gasoline engines and other miscellaneous equipment and tools.
  • Perform all work in accordance with technical manuals illustrations specifications diagrams and schematics.
  • Order parts and check for compliance; assist in maintaining inventories.
  • Supports snow and ice removal operations.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:

  • At least two years of skilled experience in maintenance and repair on automotive and/or heavy motor equipment or completion of an approved mechanical apprenticeship program; additional skilled experience is preferred.
  • Be at least 18 years of age; high school/trade school diploma or equivalent (GED) preferred.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor over extended periods.
  • Ability to work weekends holidays and overtime when required.
  • Valid drivers license and safe driving record required.
  • Valid Commercial Drivers license (CDL) with tanker (N) endorsement and passenger (P) endorsement required within 12 months of hire.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Preventive Maintenance A9 Certification (preferred).
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education experience and training that provides the required knowledge skills and abilities.

The following required licenses/certifications are desirable at the time of hire but can be obtained through the City after hire; once obtained all required licenses and/or certifications must be maintained to retain the position:

  • Satisfactory completion of State Highway Administration Basic Traffic Control Training Course.
  • Satisfactory completion of American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Flagger Training Course.
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Forklift Operator Certification.
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction Outreach Training Course.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Class A B or C Fuel Site Operators License.
  • Federal Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act 1990 Section 608 and 609) appropriate to the equipment services/inspected.
  • CPR AED and First Aid certification.

This position is non-exempt which means an individual in this position is eligible for overtime compensation under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Citys personnel regulations.
