The Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at MGH (BHI) is an off-site medical practice that operates within the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Physicians Organization and the MGH Department of Psychiatry. The NPs work collaboratively with the BHI staff physicians and other clinical staff to support the patient. The clinic combines medical monitoring patient education nutritional counseling exercise prescription cognitive-behavioral therapies individual therapy and methods to elicit the relaxation response in consultation with the patients referring physician to improve overall lifestyle and better manage symptoms. Patients at BHI are adults. Care provided ranges from identification and management of risk factors to treatment of symptoms that are either caused or exacerbated by stress (e.g. chest pain arrhythmias insomnia seizure disorders mood disturbances chronic pain inflammatory and autoimmune illnesses).
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Provides direct care to patients at the BHI in collaboration with staff physicians. Records the patient history and discusses findings with the physician. Utilizes advanced nursing knowledge to identify prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems. Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care provides virtual practice care and utilizes EPIC EMR system.
Delivers BHIs Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) program through individual and group-based approaches. Collaborates with unit staff clinical teachers clinical specialists staff specialist and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs. Assists in SMART program training activities including virtual and in-person presentations trainings mentorship and continuing medical education courses.
Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration. Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice. Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness. Identifies pertinent nursing and health delivery problems for investigation. Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to unit practice.
Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials. Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure. Identifies own learning needs and goals. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.
Qualifications
Current licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a nurse practitioner in an expanded role with a minimum of 2 years experience required.
Masters or Doctoral Degree in Nursing preferred.
Extensive facilitation experience in the delivery of individual and group-based mind body interventions. Certification in BHIs Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) program preferred.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. This NP position specifically works in a psychiatric setting providing psychiatric assessments and establishing comprehensive plans that address a broad range of concerns for patients with psychiatric disorders. May perform additional duties such as precepting small group of learners.
Essential Functions
- Provides direct care counseling and teaching to psychiatric patients.
- Complete biopsychosocial and psychopharmalogical evaluations on patients.
- Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
- Orders interprets and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic laboratory and physical examination findings.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes procedure notes operative notes and discharge summaries.
- Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
