Operates medium-sized motorized construction equipment as a major work assignment to excavate and grade earth and to transport persons materials equipment and supplies used in the construction repair and maintenance of highways buildings and other governmental installations or projects; and performs other duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for operating medium-sized motorized equipment such as street sweepers tractor loaders of up to and including bucket capacity of 1.25 cubic yards pay loaders tow wagons flatbed and dump trucks of over 5 ton factory rated capacity oil or water wagons of over 1200 gallon capacity rubber-tired roustabout cranes trench rollers or variable or fixed weight rollers of 4 to 5 ton capacity stationary or portable rock crusher and other similar medium-sized motorized equipment as a major work assignment and occasionally operates heavy motorized equipment as an incidental work assignment or for the purpose of learning to operate such equipment efficiently.
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of work experience in the operation of equipment applicable to positions in this class or certification by a licensed trainer of the ability to satisfactorily operate equipment applicable to positions in this class.
License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate Commercial Drivers License (Class A or B) with applicable endorsements and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate.
Knowledge of: operation of motorized vehicle representative of this class; laws ordinances rules and regulations governing the operations of motor vehicles; hazards and safety practices of operating motorized equipment; maintenance needs of motorized equipment representative of this class; and construction safety practices.
Ability to: operate and maintain motorized equipment representative of this class; apply skill and judgment in operating motorized equipment representative of this class; make emergency repairs to equipment representative of this class; drive skillfully courteously and safely according to traffic laws and ordinances; service motorized equipment; give and receive oral and written instructions; perform construction and maintenance operations using the equipment representative of this class without close supervision.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

The above examination is being given on an open-competitive basis to establish an eligible list which shall be effective for not more than one year unless extended by the Director of Personnel Services.
