- Completion of a two (2) year technology diploma in Forestry Horticulture Environmental Sciences Landscape Technology Urban Planning or a related field
- Two (2) years of related work experience in landscape planning and construction urban forest management restoration or reclamation
Assets:
- Journeyman Landscape Horticulturist certification
- Certified Arborist through ISA
- Accreditation in Landscape Architectural Technologist (LAT)
- Standard First Aid and CPR certification
Skills required for success:
- Ability to interpret landscape plans and specifications
- Ability to identify native plant species especially trees and shrubs
- Ability to identify invasive weed species legislated under the Alberta Weed Control Act
- Proficiency in Google applications including Google Docs Google Sheets and Google Meet
- Ability to use ArcGIS software and applications
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated communication skills both verbally and in writing
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment
- Ability to provide supervision of external contractors

Conditions of Employment:
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
Work Environment:
- This position involves a combination of fieldwork and office work
- Fieldwork will involve exposure to various environmental conditions including extreme temperatures dry/humid/dusty conditions precipitation and brightness/darkness

You will contribute to the implementation of key city plans such as Greener as We Grow the Urban Forestry Asset Management Plan and Edmontons Community Energy Transition Strategy. This position is essential in supporting the Citys environmental goals including planting 2 million new trees achieving net zero per person GHG emissions and increasing the citys urban canopy. As a Landscape Technician I - Naturalization Initiatives you will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to the development and maintenance of naturalized areas in Edmonton. This includes site selection and planning overseeing contract work monitoring and updating inventory and providing administrative and customer service support. You will work with internal and external stakeholders including contractors other City departments and the public. This role requires a blend of technical skills problem-solving abilities and effective communication to ensure the successful implementation of naturalization projects and initiatives.
What will you do
- Select potential sites for naturalization including conversion volunteer and contractor tree planting
- Develop planting plans based on plant physiology site conditions and available resources
- Oversee and inspect contract work related to naturalization ensuring conformance to contracts and City standards
- Monitor and track plant materials perform site inspections and update geospatial maps of assets
- Respond to public and internal inquiries provide education about Naturalization Initiatives and review landscape plans
