Overview:

The Juilliard School is accepting applications for full-time faculty in the Department of Music History to begin in Fall 2026.

The department teaches courses to graduate and undergraduate students with a focus on the Western classical tradition as well as the full range of music and cultures that intersect with it. Undergraduates must complete a three-semester survey core and electives whose topics vary widely. Graduate students (MM and DMA) must complete courses on diverse topics.

The salary range for this role is $94000 - $100000 per year.

Responsibilities and details:

  • The successful candidate will teach core and elective courses for undergraduate and graduate students a total of three courses per semester. Specific courses will be determined based upon departmental need and the successful candidates specialties and interests. Non-core course topics will generallyinvolve (but not necessarily be confined to) Western classical music.
  • Given these requirements candidates with demonstrable expertise in any broad area of common practice classical music are encouraged to apply particularly those with the following areas of specialty: opera from the eighteenth century to the present especially that of Italy or Germany; other staged artforms and related fields such as dance musical theater and dramaturgy; performance studies; and new critical perspectives in twenty-first-century musicology.
  • In addition to teaching duties the successful candidate will be expected to stay up-to-date with current scholarship participate in department meetings as well as departmental and school-wide committees hold regular office hours and be available to meet with students as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have in hand the Ph.D. in Musicology or a related field prior to starting employment.
  • Demonstrated success in college-level teaching.

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • A background in performance or composition or proficiency with a musical instrument including voice is helpful.
