JOB PURPOSE: The Groundskeeper under general supervision performs a variety of duties related to the maintenance of courtyards entryways walkways patios parking lots streets signs irrigation systems tennis courts volleyball courts and athletic facilities for the college. This position establishes and maintains a variety of plant life maintains and uses all related equipment and maintains grounds to ensure clean orderly and safe conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Manager Landscaping and Grounds the Groundskeeper performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Maintain the campus by mowing lawns raking leaves and sweeping walkways.
Maintain plants by ensuring they are properly fertilized pruned and trimmed.
Maintain lawns flowers ground covers shrubs and trees.
Operate and utilize powered blowers lawn mowers edgers hedge trimmers and other power equipment following safe practices as stated by manufactures recommendations.
Dispose of carcasses in accordance using proper procedures for handling.
Assist with graffiti removal.
Maintain equipment by cleaning and maintaining all non-powered equipment.
Maintain inventory of all assigned tools supplies and equipment.
Participate in composting mulching and green waste activities.
Assist in the college rubbish/recycling program.
Report repairs as needed and perform minor repairs as requested.
Report area repairs when identified and necessary to keep a safe and functional environment i.e. repairs for hardscape electrical signs hazardous trees or any other unsafe condition.
Understand and follow proper/safe use and methods for fertilizer herbicide/pesticide applications.
Maintain and use all related equipment and maintain grounds to ensure a clean orderly and safe condition on campus.
Coordinate special projects/tasks and aid as assigned.
Maintain turf athletic fields/courts shrubs trees plants irrigation system (minor installation repairs and application of landscape chemicals.
Properly mark/maintain athletic fields for regulation play to include baseball softball soccer lacrosse rugby football track & field tennis volleyball and hammer throw and other fields as directed.
Respond to roof leaks during rainy days when outdoor activities are not possible.
Assist in cleaning roofs and gutters and drains as part of annual maintenance program.
Participate in the implementation of the Colleges Emergency Management Plan and training related to Facilities & Campus Services.
Respond to emergency requests when requested.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of education training or experience that provides the required knowledge skills and ability.
Licenses/Certificates: A valid drivers license is required. Obtain Qualified Applicators Certificate (QAC) within 6 months of hire.
Experience: A minimum of 1 year of paid employment experience in the areas of groundskeeping assignments is required. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: The Groundskeeper must possess the knowledge skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed with or without reasonable accommodation using other skills and abilities not listed below.
1. Deploy professional skills in groundskeeping maintenance in collaboration with colleagues to best promote the Colleges strategic interests.
Must satisfactorily complete a post-offer functional capacity test.
Able to understand and carry out oral and written directions in the English language.
Effectively and efficiently maintain an assigned area within a predetermined time schedule.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Able and willing to work outdoors.
Repair tools or complete a request form for repairs in a timely manner when necessary.
Able to follow methods materials maintenance schedules/timing and equipment used in maintaining turf shrubs trees plants irrigation system (minor installation repairs and application of landscape chemicals).
2. Knowledge of safe working methods and procedures in groundskeeping maintenance including
Knowledge of safe working principles and practices in a college environment.
Able to stand walk bend climb push pull stoop twist stretch lift over 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance climb ladders up to 20 feet with assistance and up to 10 feet unassisted.
Able to work or stand for prolonged periods of time.
Using/wearing uniforms and safety equipment provided by the College.
Using or learning how to properly use fire extinguishers.
The safe use and repair of groundskeeping supplies tools and equipment
Safely operating and driving electric carts on campus.
Safely operating a variety of groundskeeping tools and power equipment such as blowers walk behind mowers ride-on mowers edgers hedge trimmers.
The proper use of hand held radio for immediate communication with other staff as needed.
3. Demonstrated effectiveness and clarity of verbal and written communication with excellent interpersonal communication and phone manners. Must work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
4. Able to handle multiple tasks meet deadlines and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College in support of the Colleges strategic vision and the divisions annual goals with a high standard of integrity and ethics.
5. Must have exceptional organizational and time management skills and the ability to perform basic math computations to complete work with accuracy and attention to detail.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 6:00a.m. to 2:30p.m. or 7:00am to 3:30pm Tuesday Saturday. Overtime holiday weekend and evening work hours will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Regular full-time non-exempt position. The hourly rate for this role is between $20.58 and $32.92 per specific factors that the College will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include but not be limited to: education training relevant prior experience and performance in prior roles. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
