About the branch:

Employment Standards and Residential Tenancies (ESRT) branch administers and provides information to the public regarding theEmployment Standards ActandResidential Tenancies Act.The branch supports dispute resolution processes between landlords and tenants and conducts investigations between employers and employees. ESRT has the responsibility to carry out final and binding orders levy administrative penalties and make quasi-judicial decisions pursuant to relevant legislation.

About the job:

Reporting to the Manager Dispute Resolution the Adjudicator is responsible for interpreting administering and enforcing theEmployment Standards ActandResidential Tenancies Actand related regulations.
The Adjudicator works with the parties as appropriate to resolve disputes filed under theResidential Tenancies Act. The Adjudicator mediates or holds administrative hearings issues reasoned written decisions and orders to resolve disputes in an efficient and equitable manner.
The Adjudicator investigates complaints filed under theEmployment Standards Actand issues reasoned written decisions and orders to resolve claims in an efficient and equitable manner.
The Adjudicator educates parties about their rights and responsibilities under the Acts.
Orders issued by the Adjudicators are filed at the Supreme Court of Yukon and enforced as an order of the Court.

Essential Qualifications:

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the following qualifications. Please note that selection for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Post-secondary coursework in administrative law the social sciences or other similar fields;
  • Experience interpreting and administering legislation regulations policies etc. preferably in an administrative law / regulatory law context;
  • Experience performing investigations and writing reasoned decision documents;
  • Experience in dispute resolution and / or mediation preferably in an administrative law / regulatory law context;
  • Experience working in an office environment and maintaining client service standards; and confidentiality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications (e.g. Word Outlook).

Candidates who have education training and/or experience equivalent to the above qualifications listed may be equally considered.

  • Knowledge of administrative law and working in regulatory environments;
  • Ability to critically analyze and weigh evidence and problem solve to make findings that are fair logical defensible and align with the legislation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to explain complex topics using plain succinct language;
  • Ability to work independently to manage continuously changing priorities and multiple critical and time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability to work in an area characterised by conflict and the need to maintain professionalism and confidentiality;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and
  • Ability to promote teamwork and relationship building with coworkers and parties outside of government
