Job Summary

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the Largest Organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing partnership with other City Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins reduce street homelessness provide temporary shelter and connect individuals and families to stable housing all with a focus on accountability empathy and equity.

DHS is committed to continuous improvement and employs innovative strategies to deliver high-quality services that support a swift transition from shelter to self-sufficiency. The agency manages hundreds of facilities and operates with a large team as well as a several billion-dollar budget to meet the diverse needs of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.

The Division of Shelter Intake is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the agencys Single Adult Adult Families and Families with Childrens intake and assessment sites both directly run and contracted providers. This Division is responsible for ensuring that the Citys most vulnerable population can access shelter per eligibility criteria 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.

The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is recruiting for one (1) Administrative Community Relation Specialist NM-I to function as a Manager who will:

-Develop support groups to provide support to clients on issues such as housing health childcare job search and interviewing techniques. Assist the Site Manager in developing programs to help service shelter clients and coordinate events to boost the clients morale.

-Utilize the CARES System to prepare various reports on status of clients assigned to the facility. Notify FIU Unit of high-priority incidents requiring follow ups.

- Manage the intake desk to greet new clients and to assess their immediate needs. Immediately report any issues to the Site Manager. Monitor clients entering the shelter; keep account of all clients missing curfew and the number of days curfew is missing. Report findings to the Site Manager.

-Oversee client services including the distribution of meals inspection of vacant rooms for readiness repairs status; Ensure that children two-years old and under are safe through daily evening walk-through rounds. Provide summary reports to Site Manager for decision making.

-Assume the role of Fire Warden to monitor the fire system. When necessary oversee building evacuation.

-Maintain ASW logbook; supervise staff of Community Assistant and Community Associate. Create clear definition of staff roles and responsibilities. Report any situations to Site Manager and prepare a transitional report at the end of the shift.


Hours/Schedule: Sunday Thursday 4PM 12AM RDOs: Fridays and Saturday.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university accredited by regional national professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U. S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and four years of satisfactory full-time community liaison community organization or community relations experience at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibility for planning organizing coordinating developing evaluating and/or administering a large community service program or activity; or
2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a States Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and eight years of satisfactory full-time experience as described in 1 above at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in 1 above; or
3. Education and/or experience equivalent to 1 or 2 above. Undergraduate education above the high school level may be substituted for the community liaison community organization or community relations experience but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in 1 above at the rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience up to a maximum of 4 years. Graduate education beyond the baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the community liaison community organization or community relations experience but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in 1 above on the basis of 30 graduate credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience up to a maximum of 2 years. However all candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or its educational
equivalent approved by a States Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full-time experience in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in 1 above.
