Vice President Mid-Market Lending Level 23: Salaries typically range from $210 877 to $279 515 annually based on qualifications and experiences plus a performance-based incentive.
Location:
Export Development Canada operates in a hybrid work environment currently requiring employees to work in the office 3 days per week. (subject to change)
This role can be performed from EDCs headquarters in Ottawa or from one of our Community Hubs located in Toronto or Montréal.
Relocation assistance is available for candidates who meet the eligibility criteria.

Team Overview:
The Vice President Mid-Market Lending (VP) leads the strategic development and execution of EDCs growth-focused lending activities for mid-market Canadian companies expanding internationally. The VP is accountable for driving the growth and performance of a diverse lending portfolio for businesses across the agriculture manufacturing energy and critical minerals sectors.
A key mandate of the role is driving collaboration across functions including business development credit structuring and risk management teams spanning across Canada ensuring a unified approach to client engagement and portfolio strategy. By aligning these groups around a shared vision and collective accountability the VP bridges EDCs commercial lending and risk management practices with EDCs public policy mandate ensuring that growth financing contributes meaningfully to broader economic development goals.
What you will be doing:
Strategic Leadership and Vision
Lead the strategic development and execution of EDCs growth-focused lending activities for mid-market Canadian companies expanding globally including solutions such as working capital term loans and structured financing.
Oversee a portfolio of loans for businesses across the agriculture manufacturing energy and critical minerals sectors.
Identify and prioritize sectors and markets where lending can have the highest impact on Canadian export growth and competitiveness with a focus on long-term growth and sustainability.
Grow the lending program setting ambitious targets for growth over the next few years and ensuring the value proposition of the program is understood across the organization.
Balance commercial viability with developmental impact supporting businesses that may be under-served by traditional financial institutions but have strong growth potential.
Risk and Credit Oversight
Ensure sound credit and risk management aligned with EDCs risk appetite and public mandate.
Shape and lead the approach to transaction risk tolerance and the development of policies procedures and related guidelines.
Anticipate and understand risks and interdependencies to support in enterprise decision making.
Partner closely with risk management and corporate oversight teams to ensure compliance with the organizations enterprise risk framework and relevant regulatory requirements ensuring integration with the broader corporate policy framework.
Provide guidance and endorsement on complex deals and transactions ensuring appropriate due diligence and presenting deals to the Board of Directors for approval.
Culture and Team Development
Foster collaboration and bring together functions including origination business development underwriting and risk management teams under one vision.
Inspire a collective shared vision for all team members focused around working towards the same goals growth impact and sound lending and ensure that decisions are made with a clear view of both commercial opportunity and EDCs unique mandate.
Lead and mentor a team of lending professionals responsible for business origination deal structuring and portfolio management building a performance culture focused on impact client success and responsible growth.
Business Development & Client Relationships
Build and maintain relationships with Canadian businesses financial institutions and industry associations to identify lending opportunities.
Work closely with clients to structure financing solutions tailored to their growth and export strategies.
Partner with banks and other lenders and global institutions to co-lend or syndicate deals that extend EDCs reach.
Portfolio and Program Performance
Define clear performance metrics and reporting frameworks for the Ontario growth lending portfolio.
Monitor and communicate progress against key goals including:
Portfolio composition and growth (e.g. size diversification year-over-year increases).
Program profitability and long-term financial sustainability.
Impact on the target economic segment including contributions to Canadian export growth and job creation.
Begin developing a five-year portfolio strategy outlining growth trajectories sector focus and risk-return parameters.
Strategic and Operational Foundations
Demonstrate deep expertise in mid-marketing lending private credit structured finance and portfolio risk management.
Conduct a comprehensive review of existing lending programs products and services assessing their performance competitiveness and alignment with EDCs strategic objectives.
Develop actionable recommendations and a strategic plan to enhance the programs value proposition improve delivery and drive portfolio growth in the Ontario market.
Relationship Building and Stakeholder Alignment
Build strong relationships with senior leadership lending partners and external financial institutions.
Establish credibility with key internal stakeholders within the organization including senior management the Board of Directors and direct reports.
Promote alignment and broker collaboration across business development underwriting and risk management functions.
What we are looking for:
10 years of progressive experience in financial services with expertise spanning mid-market corporate lending equity private credit and subordinated debt.
Demonstrated expertise in credit and portfolio management with a strong understanding of Canadas financial and commercial lending landscape.
Proven ability to assess and manage credit risk applying sound judgment within the context of a public policy-driven mandate.
Degree in business finance economics or a related field.
Must be bilingual in both official languages (English and French).

Knowledge of diverse industries covered with the lending portfolio including agriculture critical minerals energy consumer goods and packaging and export-driven industries broadly.
Strong understanding of risk management frameworks regulatory requirements and governance processes relevant to financial institutions and Crown corporations.
Experience leading cross-functional teams and building alignment around a common vision across functions.
Track record of strategic leadership and the ability to see the bigger picture identify growth opportunities and translate strategy into operational plans and measurable outcomes.
Demonstrated success in team development and mentorship and with fostering a culture of collaboration accountability and high performance.
Proven relationship-building skills with clients financial partners and internal stakeholders and the ability to communicate complex financial concepts with clarity and influence.
Deep understanding of private credit markets and the needs of mid-market companies expanding internationally.
Customer-centered and solution-oriented mindset with a commitment to advancing EDCs mission of helping Canadian businesses grow globally.
MBA or other graduate degree considered an asset.
