Your role

In tandem with the CBC/Radio-Canada editorial team you are responsible for the direction and presentation of programs and program segments. You must also support hosts and reporters in preparing producing and editing stories. The successful candidate will primarily produce remote newscasts or other programs for regional French Services.

Specifically you work on shortlisting preparing and taking a program or program segment to air and perform related production duties. Work is governed by CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and/or programming policies standards and practices but there is latitude for creativity initiative and independent judgment.

On the technical side you are responsible for checking requirements and quality of programs or program segments. Your duties also include programming and operating the Ross OverDrive automated presentation switching system as well as peripherals like audio consoles robot cameras intercom and you must demonstrate sound editorial judgment throughout the production process.

You have a passion for directing and love multitasking in a live environment. You direct the host and team during production to ensure that a quality product goes to air. You make a number of technical and editorial decisions before and during the program ensuring consistency with our brand image. As Switcher-Director your leadership facilitates your integration into the editorial and production teams and allows you to actively participate in the production tasks related to the preparation of the show.

Key tasks:

  • Participate in the conception planning editing and production of the program or segment being directed.

  • Conceive plan develop and direct the presentation elements and program style ensuring consistency with the program plan and the case of daily programs monitor the progress of the daily program plan particularly the development of production elements and inform the Executive Producer or Producer reporters and crew of any significant new developments or changes.

  • Manage and prepare graphics for the program or program segment.

  • Ensure that the programs set is operational for tapings.

  • Organize and rehearse all elements of the show to ensure reporters and crew are well prepared.

  • Ensure that all items to be used in the program are organized and broadcast-ready.

  • Provide reporters participants and members of the production crew with clear direction throughout the program.

  • Consult with and coordinate other specialists involved in the program project to ensure audio and visual unity and optimum creative and technical quality throughout the production.

  • Switch and mix audio and video elements involved in the production.

  • Devise audio and/or visual effects to produce results consistent with the creative and technical objectives of the program.

  • Provide reporters and crew with feedback to assist their performance.

As required perform the following tasks:

  • Finalize scripts.

  • Choose program elements and/or participants.

  • Act as Associate Director/Associate Producer - Technician.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from community college in production and post-production techniques plus seven (7) years of practical and relevant experience

  • Ability to work well under pressure for extended periods with multiple people

  • Editorial judgment leadership and decision-making skills

  • Sense of initiative and autonomy

  • Interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent command of the English language both written and spoken. Written and spoken french is an asset

  • Good general knowledge

  • Strong interest in working in a news environment

  • Ability to work simultaneously

  • Comfortable with computer tools

  • Knowledge of AVID iNews Ross Overdrive production tools is an asset
