Job Summary

Description

SDU Robotics part of theMaersk Mc-Kinney Moller Institute University of Southern Denmark (SDU) invites applications for one or more fully funded 3-year PhD positions wherethe candidate will work on different projects aimed at developing control frameworks for soft continuum surgical robots across various surgical applications using techniques such as advanced sensing AI-based and reinforcement learning (RL)-based control and soft continuum robot simulation. The starting date is expected to be February 15 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be agreed with the successful candidate. The workplace is at SDUs main campus in Odense Denmark and the work is expected to be primarily onsite.

What we offer

  • An exciting opportunity to work at the cutting edge of robotics for real-world applications.
  • A collaborative and supportive work environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and leadership.
  • Access to state-of-the-art technology and resources.

Project description

Soft and continuum surgical robots represent a new generation of minimally invasive systems with superior dexterity and compliance enabling navigation through complex anatomical structures such as blood vessels the bronchial tree and endoscopic pathways. Despite their potential challenges remain in accurate modeling sensing and control due to their highly deformable and nonlinear nature. This PhD project aims to advance the navigation and control of soft and continuum surgical robots for applications in endovascular interventions bronchoscopy and endoscopy. The candidate will work across multiple projects that share a common foundation in sensing and control of soft robotic systems.

The research will focus on developing simulation and digital twin frameworks for soft and continuum robots integrating advanced sensing technologies for shape and force estimation and implementing sensor-based feedback control strategies. The project will also explore AI-based and reinforcement learning (RL)-based control approaches to enable intelligent and adaptive robotic the later stages of the PhD the developed control frameworks will be validated in ex-vivo and in-vivo environments ensuring their effectiveness in realistic surgical scenarios. This interdisciplinary project provides a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of robotics AI and biomedical engineering contributing to the next generation of intelligent surgical systems.
