Job Summary

Our client a fast-growing software development startup is seeking a Controller to lead and scale its accounting function. This is a pivotal finance leadership role responsible for financial reporting process optimization and building systems that support growth. Youll work cross-functionally with leadership across Finance Legal HR and Operations to establish scalable tech-forward accounting infrastructure.

What Youll Do

  • Oversee all accounting operations including GL revenue recognition AP/AR payroll and compliance.
  • Lead and manage annual audits acting as primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Deliver accurate monthly quarterly and annual financial statements; ensure GAAP compliance.
  • Implement and enhance accounting systems internal controls and automation tools to improve efficiency.
  • Partner with FP&A on budgeting forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to streamline financial workflows and reporting processes.

What You Bring

  • 5 years of progressive accounting experience currently at Controller or Assistant Controller level.
  • Background in B2B SaaS and experience scaling a high-growth startup.
  • Strong technical accounting expertise and deep GAAP knowledge.
  • Experience leading end-to-end audits (Big 4 or Mid-Tier firm experience preferred).
  • Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA required.
  • Hands-on mindset excited to build systems and processes from the ground up.
  • Proficiency with automation and AI-driven financial tools.

Look for candidates with Big Four / Mid-Tier Accounting audit experience PLUS startup Controller or Assistant Controller experience at B2B SaaS companies. The startup operating experience is critical - dont submit pure Big Four / Mid-Tier Accounting audit candidates.

Sweet Spot Experience

Focus on 5 - 10 years of total experience and ensure candidates want to roll up their sleeves in a lean startup environment.

Must-Have Technical Requirements

CPA certification is required. Strong GAAP knowledge and full-cycle audit leadership experience is essential. They need to handle Laurels first external audit next year.

Industry Focus

B2B SaaS experience is required and AI/ML company experience is a huge plus.

Scaling Experience Matters

Look for candidates whove been through meaningful growth phases. They need to understand what it takes to scale accounting operations.
