Job Summary

Definition

Under general supervision of the Museum Collections Managerassists with appraising arranging describing and long-term preservation of the artifact collection within the SRPMIC Huhugam Ki: Museum. Responsible for learning techniques for the preservation documentation and overall maintenance of the museums collections pertaining to the SRPMIC for current and future generations. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-exempt.

Examples of Tasks

1. Collections:Maintain objects and materials in accordance with artifact collections management policy.

  • Assists with ensuring cultural considerations for collections preservation.
  • Learns to assist in long-range collections development.
  • Implements Museum Best Practices for research compilation analysis and preservation of historical and culturally significant statistical information.
  • Implements conservation guidelines for exhibitions and actively assists in installation which may include mount making and gallery preparation.
  • Assists with performing physical inventories for collection analysis development and maintenance.
  • Assists with entering archived information into database to record and analyze collection and maintenance information.
  • Assists with the security of collections.

2. Conservation and Preservation: Assists Museum Collections Manager in conducting industry standard conservation and preservation activities for the Museum.

  • Learns and implements all professional ethical and professional standards for archival conservation and preservation work activities.
  • Assists with ensuring proper care and preservation of the museum collections by maintaining the museum artifact collections storage rooms environmental conditions and analysis curatorial housekeeping and conservation projects.
  • Assists with handling preparing transporting cataloging preserving storage and evaluating museum objects according to implemented curatorial standards.
  • Learns to identify collection conservation and preservation problems including poor storage materials insect infestations and dirt/dust concerns.
  • Assists with planning and preparing Museum exhibits.
  • Assists with disaster planning for museum collections.

3. Research: Assists with conducting and documenting artifact collections research activities for the Museum.

  • Participates in research related to collections.
  • Assists with ensuring research policies and procedures are followed with all research requests.
  • Assists with maintaining a library of available sources of collections materials preservation techniques arrangement methods materials management items descriptions and cataloguing and preservation techniques.
  • Assists with evaluating potential acquisitions to determine the value and appropriateness of the artifacts.
  • Assists with providing reference and research information services to patrons.
  • Communicates with public public officials historians and Tribal Government employees to assist patrons with research and acquire additional documents and collections.
  • Assists with research and analyzing documents and collection statistics to identify future needs.
  • Assists with interviews of Community elders and other knowledgeable individuals to acquire and archive important cultural/historical information.

4. Collections Policies and Procedures: Implements and maintains written appraisal and cataloging policies practices techniques and procedures.

  • Assists with acquiring input from SRPMIC members to develop policies that are culturally appropriate.
  • Practices industry professional ethics relating to collections management.
  • Assists in the development of research policies and procedures.
  • May assist as subject matter expert regarding policies and practices that protect culturally sensitive and historically significant materials and information.

5. Communication and Informational Materials: Acts as a SRPMIC and Museum resource for catalogued materials of historic and/or cultural significance.

  • Assists with Planning developing writing and presenting a variety of informative promotional and educational curatorial related information.
  • Assists with developing aids such as card catalogs registers series descriptions inventories and guides that explain the history scope content and arrangement of the collections.
  • Assists with conducting workshops tours or other educational programs for the Community regarding preservation to staff and the public.
  • Contributes to a working environment that attracts and motivates volunteers students and community members to explore the fields of Museum or collections management on an as needed basis.
  • Represents the Huhugam Ki: Museum before various Community groups potential donors and individual researchers.

6. Administration: Assists with the compilation of applicable statistics and other information relating to collection materials.

  • Assists with writing and presenting reports as required to the Museum Collections Manager Museum Manager Department Director Tribal Government officials or the Tribal Council as required.
  • May direct volunteers and ensures compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Assists the Museum Collections Manager with Museum special events as necessary.
  • Assists the Museum Education Assistant with preparation of materials programs workshops or classes.

7. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related tasks as assigned by the Museum Manager or Department Director.


Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of the history culture laws ordinances customs and traditions of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of museum collection practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of formats used for a variety of correspondence reports.
  • Knowledge of the staff and services provided by the Huhukgam Ki Museum.
  • Skill in describing historical materials.
  • Skill with both verbal and written communication.
  • Skill exercising initiative improving developing and conducting museum programs.
  • Skill using a variety of instruments related to preservation and exhibition of collections materials.
  • Skill using standard office equipment and basic hand tools.
  • Skill with exhibit development and enhancement.
  • Skill with research methods.
  • Ability to properly prepare historical materials for exhibition and/or storage.
  • Ability to conduct research explain museum procedures and handle matters of concern and/or complaints.
  • Ability to network and establish close working relationships with various historical groups businesses schools and non-profit agencies.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with all levels of the department and Community.
  • Ability to use a computer including generally accepted & specialized audit-related software.
  • Ability to implement available sources of museum collections.
  • Ability to implement appraisal acquisition arrangement management description and preservation procedures.
  • Ability to learn and implement professional ethics relating to collections management.
  • Ability to stay current on collections management issues and trends.
  • Ability to learn historical research compilation analysis and preservation methods and techniques.
  • Ability to learn and implement collections management techniques and principles and procedures used in the retrieval storage and exhibition of records.
  • Ability to learn and implement principles and procedures of research compilation analysis and preservation of statistical information.
  • Ability to learn and implement principles and procedures of collections management and recording systems.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to approximately 45 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or a GED equivalent is required.
  1. For enrolled community members without a GED must obtain a GED. Requires participation in the HR GED Program and successful completion of the Arizona state certified exam in order to continue employment with SRPMIC.
  • An Associates degree from an accredited college or university in Museum Studies History Library Science or related discipline preferably with courses in Museum Collections Management is preferred.
  • Any completion of academic courses or professional programs in Museum Studies is highly preferred.
  • Basic knowledge (not fluency) of the Pima and Maricopa languages is preferred but not required.

Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and experience that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job may be considered.

Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights weekends and holidays.
  • May be required to stand or walk for extended periods as well as lift and carry special (heavy) equipment or other objects.
