Under the direction of the assigned Administrator and supervision of credentialed staff assists in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; perform related clerical tasks as assigned.

An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of Paraprofessional-Music in order to fill existing and future vacancies. These positions are part-time 6.0 hours per day August through June.

All testing will take place at La Mesa Spring Valley School Districts Education Service Center 4750 Date Avenue La Mesa CA 91942 (Phone: ) unless notified otherwise. Test starts promptly at the scheduled time. Latecomers will not be admitted. Candidates will be required to present valid photo identification prior to sign-in.

Applications must be received by filing deadline to be considered for the next test date.Faxed materials are not acceptable.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
A completed application for employment must be received in Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date. Faxed materials are not acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications:
One year of experience working in a music environment
AND
Private or college coursework in music theory or a related field and
AND
Possess an Associates Degree or higher (submit copy of degree with application).
OR
Completed 48 units of college work (submit transcripts with application).
OR
Successful completion of the Every Student Succeeds Act (formerly known as NCLB) Exam given by La Mesa Spring Valley School District (submit copy of certificate with application).
AND
Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

ESSA COMPLIANCE- The Paraprofessional-Music classification requires that all incumbents meet the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements. This can be accomplished by one of the following: a) 2 years of completed study at an institution of higher learning (48 units or more with transcripts submitted with application) b) an Associates Degree or higher (copy of degree submitted with application) OR c) by passing the District ESSA exam.

Merit exam is for those who have submitted a classified application meet minimum qualifications and have satisfied the ESSA requirements above.

Examinations will be given by appointment only. Following the conclusion of the examination process the candidates will be ranked and notified of their scores.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist in the instruction and reinforcement of musical concepts appreciation theory and instrumentation to individuals and groups of students; conduct and monitor exercises rehearsals and performances; take attendance and maintain related records.
  • Observes and controls behavior of students in the classroom individual group sessions and a variety of school environments according to established procedures; monitors and interacts with students during outdoor field trips and other school activities as directed.
  • Operates a variety of classroom and office equipment including a computer copier and assigned software.
  • Participate in the coordination of student music activities and lessons; participate in student activities related to music education and rehearsals.
  • Perform clerical tasks as assigned including duplicating materials filing typing and maintaining assigned records; reproduce distribute and maintain music materials; prepare music packets for students.
  • Provides routine basic first aid and CPR to ill or injured students according to established procedures as needed; responds to medical emergencies and prepares related paperwork as appropriate; refers students to the health office as needed.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents regarding student progress behavior and related matters.
  • Assist students with adjusting or preparing instruments; respond to questions from students as needed.
OTHER DUTIES:

  • Attends and participates in meetings in-service trainings workshops and conferences.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit and the District.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: private or college coursework in music theory or a related field and one year of experience working in a music environment.

Incumbents must meet requirements specified under Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Special qualifications include:

  • Completed at least 48 units at an institution of higher education OR
  • Obtained an associates or higher degree (college level) OR
  • Met (pass) a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal local academic assessment knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading writing and mathematics

CERTIFICATIONS AND TESTING REQUIRED:
  • Pass the Districts applicable proficiency exam for the job class with a satisfactory score
  • After offer of employment obtain:
    • Criminal Justice and FBI Fingerprint Clearance Negative TB test result plus periodic post-employment retest as required (currently every four years)
    • Pre-employment physical exam through Districts provider at Districts expense
