Position Summary:

This is a Union Position

The Coordinator of Maker Education supports all maker-based programming campus-wide and works collaboratively and cross-departmentally to provide quality maker experiences. This role works with the Manager of Maker Education to develop daily programming manage supply inventory and maintain all making and tech focused exhibits. The Coordinator of Maker Education is responsible for the identification and obtaining of tools and materials required for these programs and in assisting Educators Interns Volunteers and the public is their appropriate use. They work to create welcoming spaces and provide high-quality visitor-facing maker programming which embody joy creativity curiosity and kindness.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Create high-quality authentic joyful and creative making experiences and programs for the Childrens Museum of Pittsburgh and MuseumLab clearly aligned to the Museum mission vision key values and MAKESHOP Principles of Practice.
  • Order and maintain supplies for maker spaces and programs including purchasing budget tracking preparation and inventory monitoring.
  • Work with the Manager of Maker Education and the Communications team to ensure that public-facing calendars and messaging is up-to-date and correctly portrays maker programs.
  • Facilitate daily hands-on maker programming for visitors that is regularly changing varied in format (drop in workshop etc.) uses real tools and materials and is situated within and inspired by the larger making community.
  • Models best practices for facilitation and tool use within the makerspace to support Educators interns volunteers and visitors.
  • Work with Manager of Maker Educator to meet budgetary and purchasing needs for general operations grants and other projects including observing policies and procedures for financial management and record keeping.
  • Assist in crafting realistic timelines and approaches to new maker-related projects grants and events.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Create welcoming and brave spaces that respect visitors of all ages.
  • Collaborate with other teams and departments on projects including the design and implementation of sponsored exhibit-related and cross-departmental programs.
  • Work to maintain exhibit spaces prioritizing safety aesthetics and usability.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors Degree in Art Art Education or related field. Substitution of years of experience may be considered equivalent to formal educational training.

Experience:

  • Two or more years of experience required: Developing implementing and facilitating art or maker programming. Previous work with families educators and administrators strongly preferred; previous experience with budgeting or inventory management strongly preferred.

Skills:

  • Enthusiasm for working with children and families.
  • Understanding of the maker movement and community including a variety of tools materials and processes.
  • Open-mindedness flexible thinking reflective and ability to adjust expectations and actions as needed.
  • Interest in expanding personal skillsets and supporting skill development of others.
  • Highly organized with an eye for detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proactive ability to take initiative and able to work both with a team and independently.
  • Ability to plan ahead and work within both external- and self-imposed timelines.
  • Team-oriented.

Physical Requirements and Equipment Usage:

  • Walking standing and sitting: The duties and responsibilities associated with this position will be performed in a stationary position (standing or sitting) for approximately 50% of the workday and will require movement throughout museum spaces to interact with visitors educators and to activate museum experiences.
  • Lifting: Frequent lifting and movement of materials and supplies up to 20 lbs. Occasional lifting and moving of furniture equipment and supplies weighing up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Manual Dexterity: Frequent preparation of tools and materials including assembly organization and storage of items. May operate various equipment including but not limited to power tools sharp or hot tools etc.

Work Environment Hours of Work and Travel Requirements:

  • Weekend availability is required (1 day a week) and evening availability is occasionally required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Essential duties of this position will be performed in a museum environment which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families.

Clearances: FBI fingerprints results PA Child Abuse History Certification (Act 33) and PA State Criminal Record Check (Act 34) are required.
