As the Elementary School OutreachLibrarian you will:

  • make connections and develop relationshipswith public and privateschools in Mount Prospect that servekids ingrades 1-5.
  • createprograms and presentationsfor grade schoolers in Mount Prospect including book talks STEAMprogramsauthor studies research presentationsfield tripsetc.
  • develop and manage services like Teacher Cards and Book Bags with other members of the outreach team for elementary school teachers.
  • develop assigned collections to ensure that children and their families feel welcomed and valued.
  • coordinatea yearly author visit in collaborationwith in-house programmers.
  • provide reference and readersadvisory services at the public desk.

SCHEDULE:Full-time non-exempt. 37.5 hours per week.

Monday Tuesday and Thursday 9am to 5pm
Wednesday 1pm to 9pm
Friday 9am to 5pm; approximately once every 7 weeks 11am to 7pm
Participation in a weekend rotation approximately once every 4 weekends:Saturday 9am to 5pm& Sunday 11am to 5pm

PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the Department Head the Elementary School Outreach Librarian facilitates the development coordination implementation and assessment of outreach services to elementary schools within the community. This position builds relationships with the children (1st-5th grade) school librarians teachers and other school staff located within the elementary schools. The Elementary School Outreach Librarian also creates and evaluates content for programming collection development in addition to providing readers advisory and reference services on the public service desk.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

This position consists of the following essential duties:

  • Outreach Planning and Coordination (approx. 45%)
  • Public Service (approx. 30%)
  • Collection Development (approx. 15%)

Other non-essential duties include programming activity and other departmental administrative tasks.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Outreach

  1. Coordinates implements and presents outreach programming for children from first through fifth grade in a school setting.
  2. Coordinates implements and presents outreach programming for teachers and other staff who work with grade school children in a school setting.
  3. Collaborates with other outreach team members to develop new outreach programming/services for families with children.
  4. Collaborates with other members of the outreach team on the Outreach Summer Reading Program and assists in directing the workload of temporary staff.
  5. Facilitates the book bag service to elementary schools and selects materials to fill book bag requests as needed.
  6. Coordinates and maintains the teacher card program with other members of the outreach team.
  7. Generates newsletters brochures and bibliographies which promote services for local elementary schools.
  8. Attends networking events meetings and other community events when assigned.
  9. Prepares reports and compiles statistics relating to school outreach.
  10. Monitors current trends in public libraries specifically focusing on outreach.
  11. Works with library (marketing) staff to obtain appropriate resources and items for outreach activity.

Public Service

  1. Assists patrons at the public desk in locating materials.
  2. Applies MPPL-values-based customer service.
  3. Provides reference and readers advisory services.
  4. Serves as in-charge staff when assigned.
  5. Fulfills and/or reviews book bags as requested by community members.
  6. Assists in the use of equipment items in the public service area.

Collection Development

  1. Performs collection development tasks related to selection maintenance and weeding of assigned youth collections.
  2. Compiles bibliographic aids and prepares displays within the department.

Other

  1. Coordinates implements and presents professional development opportunities and programming for those who provide elementary services.
  2. Plans prepares and presents field trips for those students in first through fifth grade.
  3. Plans and presents story times and programs in the department as needed.
  4. Attends appropriate meetings workshops and seminars.
  5. Serves on committees and community groups as assigned.
  6. Supervises volunteers as assigned.
  7. Serves as in-charge staff when assigned.
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school required (or equivalent education and/or work experience). Prior work experience with children and childrens programming and/or outreach desirable.
