JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Health Physicist.

Reporting to the Manager Radiation Protection Programs & Field Support (Health Physics Department) this position performs radiation protection duties in assigned areas of the radiation safety program for the nuclear plants and support facilities. This includes carrying out various responsibilities regarding radiation safety as it pertains to the protection of station personnel and the general public residing in the vicinity of the nuclear stations and facilities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Assist Supervisor in the operations of the internal and external dosimetry service at station or site and in the estimated measurement of internal and in the estimation of external doses received in unusual situations.
  • At the request of the Supervisor provide information and advice to design groups for design changes which will improve radiation protection at the nuclear station including but not limited to any of the following areas: radiation shielding radiation instrumentation radiation personal protective equipment other ALARA initiatives.
  • Carry out radiation investigations and duties such as controlling the transfer of radioactive material from the station.
  • Formulate new or revised Radiation Protection Procedures for consideration possible approval and use throughout OPGs nuclear generating stations.
  • Interpret regulations and policy and provide technical assistance in health physics to the operations group and approve radiation protection methods and equipment.
  • Investigate non-route radiation protection problems and make recommendations as to their resolution and assist Supervisor in environmental radiological measurements made in the vicinity of the station.
  • Participate in the development of training courses and other training material and conduct such courses. Assist in the maintenance of a continuous program through re-examination of plant personnel to sustain a high level of radiation protection knowledge of the station.
  • Prepare routine reports on station radiological conditions and assist in the preparation of reports for outside regulatory authorities on the radiation protection program in the station. Further prepare technical reports on radiation protection experience at the station.
  • Solve radiation problems arising specifically in the reactor units at an independent multi-unit nuclear station having three or more units and assess on a continuing basis the effectiveness of such solutions. Other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4 Year University Degree in an appropriate field such as science or engineering.
  • 6 years and up to and including 8 years of relevant experience is considered necessary to be successful in this role
  • Any of the following would be considered an asset for this position: Certification as a Radiation Safety Officer Certification as Health Physicist experience in the Classification of Radioactive Waste or background in electronics.
