Job Duties:

Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality updates student advising records and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate timely and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success retention and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming equitable and inclusive work environment.

Serve as the SSS Academic Advisor to a caseload of approximately 110-120 students who are

members of the UW-Stevens Point TRiO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The TRiO SSS program serves 140 UW-Stevens Point students annually. TRiO SSS students are first-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree) students and/or students whose family income meets federally established guidelines. Students with a document disability may also be served in the program. The goal of the TRiO SSS program is to increase the student participants persistence rate maintain their good academic standing and to increase graduation rates of the students it serves.

This is a grant funded position through the Department of Education for the period of 9/25/2025-9/24/2030. This is an academic staff appointment that will be reviewed annually and is contingent on continuation of funding by the U.S. Department of Education.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests skills and values to match appropriate field of study/career options and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising recruitment and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops panel discussions and guest speakers
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
  • Receives processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
  • Proactively engages students as needed

Compensation:

Minimum $45000 per year based on qualifications and experience

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Two years of academic and/or related advising experience
  • Two years of experience working with disadvantaged students such as low-income first-generation students and/or person with disabilities
  • Demonstrated experience or evidence of effective interpersonal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to work with sensitivity to the needs and build rapport with students who are low-income first-generation students and/or person with disabilities university partners and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in counseling higher education or a related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs
  • Experience with advising or teaching preferred

Demonstrated computer skills in working with student record keeping databases (i.e. Peoplesoft Navigate or similar system) data analysis skills and MS Office Suite.
