THE DEPARTMENT:

The Animal and Veterinary Sciences Department is an academic unit in the Huntley College of Agriculture with responsibility to provide instruction to students majoring in Animal Science or Animal Health Science or who are interested in specific classes dealing with animal production and management. The livestock units (Beef Sheep and Swine) are operated to support the teaching research and extension mission of the Department College and University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instructional Support - assist faculty with instruction of classes and laboratory programs; assist students with project work
  • Herd Health and Maintenance for Instructional Support - oversee and direct feeding and health care of sheep goats and swine herds monitor pasture and irrigation needs for animal use; oversee breeding sales as needed to support instructional needs
  • Support for Research Activities - provide assistance for faculty and student research projects
  • Support for Community Service Activities - promote the Huntley College of Agriculture through community outreach activities including petting farm at events such as Pumpkin Festival)
  • Operational Management - facility and equipment maintenance; overseeing student assistants; maintaining State and Foundation financial records and budgets; maintaining safe working environment and safety training of students; oversee day-to-day operations of the sheep/goat/swine units; work under the direction of Asst. Farm Manager to complete all tasks
  • Due to operation of livestock trailers incumbent will be placed in the Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Random Drug and/or Alcohol Testing Program and will be subjected to random drug and/or alcohol testing

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Combination - Equivalent to 60 semester or 90 quarter units of academic work at a recognized college or university with courses in animal husbandry livestock management and related animal science subjects. (Additional specialized experience which has demonstrated that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledges and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on the basis of one year of experience for each 30 semester units or 45 quarter units of accredited college work completed.)
  • Driver License Valid and in State Valid CA Drivers license with insurance.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in care feeding and breeding of livestock.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern livestock feeding breeding and health care practices. Ability to recognize the symptoms of and assist in the treatment of common livestock diseases and other health programs; ability to develop a systematic program of herd improvement and development; ability to supervise unskilled student help in the care and feeding of livestock; ability to maintain clear and concise records and prepare reports; ability to coordinate the practical aspects of livestock production with the academic program and the student learning process; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with farm employees faculty and students.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. degree in animal science or closely related field

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on theCSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on theCSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4595 and maximum $6694 per month. University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points if their license is Class C or 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points if their license is Class A B or C with endorsements. For more information go to the
