The Research Priority Area (RPA)Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public at the University of Amsterdam aims to strengthen the interaction between science citizen science social debate and various professional practices. The challenges of the future require scientifically informed policies and equipped citizens. But how do we align science policy and society How do we involve the public in scientific debates about complex issues such as quantum mental health climate change and the responsible use of new technologies such as generative AI How do we collaborate with the public in scientific research to generate new knowledge or understanding And how do we communicate the different scientific methods including their possible shortcomings to the public The RPA brings together UvA methodologists and philosophers of science and technology from fields as diverse as psychiatry and mental health human rights and the digital humanities. The RPA is a collaboration between the faculties of Humanities Law Science Social and Behavioural Sciences and the faculty of Medicine at Amsterdam UMC.

The RPA is housed at the Institute for Advanced Study and is coordinated by the Faculty of Humanities. The Scientific Coordinators are Huub Dijstelbloem Claudi Bockting Rens Bod Denny Borsboom Yvonne Donders Selin Gerlek Sebastian De Haro and Sonja Smets.

What you will do

The community manager:

  • Organizes events varying from workshops to lectures and from public dialogues to design sessions for researchers external partners and the public at large and provides practical support for these occasions;
  • Assists in promoting and facilitating various projects arising within the RPA and supports in organizing calls for funding and fellowships and supporting procedures in close collaboration with faculty support staff.
  • Maintains the RPAs website draft and circulate the RPA newsletter as well as the social media accounts and help to further develop the media presence of the RPA.
  • Assists with overviewing the budget and preparing periodic evaluation and supervision meetings.
  • Guides the work of the RPA directorate and ensures that the directorate is provided with information about relevant developments.
  • Helps build and expand the network of UvA scientists specialising in methodology science in society professional science citizen science and scientific policy advice.
  • Helps buils an external network for the RPA Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public. To this end the office manager interconnects with interested persons and institutions outside the UvA governmental and private and facilitates their interaction with UvA partners in the RPA.

What we ask of you

  • You have experience of and enthusiasm for proactively setting up and supervising an inter/transdisciplinary community within a complex organization.
  • You have an affinity with Science in Society issues as evidenced by a degree or experience in this field.
  • You have good social and communication skills.
  • You have a good command of written and spoken Dutch and English.
  • You are a good organizer.
  • You are independent but also work well within a team.
  • You are flexible results-oriented and service-minded.

Knowledge of the work areas of the various faculties of the University of Amsterdam would be an advantage for this position.

What we offer you

This parttime position is offered for an initial 12 months for 152 hours per week with the option to extend for up to 24 months subject to satisfactory performance and mutual agreement. The UFO profile management/office-assistant 1 (scale 8) applies to this position. This means a gross monthly salary between 3.382 and 4.484 for full-time employment (38 hours per week) excluding holiday allowance (8%) and year-end bonus (8.3%).

Where you will work

You will work with an enthusiastic and professional academic team in an inspiring international work environment at the heart of Amsterdam. The Research Priority Area (RPA) Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public meets every Monday at the University of Amsterdams Institute for Advanced Study. You will work at the IAS alongside the vibrant RPA community including the RPA Directorate researchers and external partners. The other day you will work at the Faculty of Humanities. You will be reaching out to external partners and collaborators be in touch with the larger Humanities/UvA community and with other interfaculty / interdisciplinary projects.
