Job Summary
The Liberty County Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants for the position of Recruit Firefighter within the Fire Services department. This position will require recruits to attend classes for Eighteen (18) weeks Monday Friday to become certified in Firefighter I Hazmat Core Crash/Victim Extrication and Emergency Medical Responder. Individuals successfully completing the training program will be moved to the full-time position of Firefighter with a shift schedule of 48 hours on/96 hours off (48/96).
Major Job Duties
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Performs firefighting work; including preventing; combating; and extinguishing fires to protect lives; property; and the environment.
- Rescues fire and accident victims utilizing the appropriate extrication methods and equipment.
- Provides emergency medical care within the scope of practice.
- Performs duties involving hazardous materials.
- Maintains and inspects equipment and apparatus to ensure a constant state of readiness to respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
- Provides fire prevention information to the public related to fire and life safety education.
- Enters information into computer programs for call reporting; equipment inventory; information sharing; and communication.
- Performs housekeeping; building maintenance; and grounds keeping duties.
- Tests and maintains equipment to ensure proper function and readiness; including fire hoses; ladders; fire pumps on apparatus; fire hydrants; and medical equipment.
- Drives department vehicles including passenger vehicles and fire apparatus in emergency and non-emergency modes in response to calls for service; normal work requirements; and training.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
- Intermittently sitting; standing; walking; bending; crouching; or stooping
- Frequently lifts light and occasionally lifts heavy objects; climbs ladders; uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity; and distinguishes between shades of color.
- Work environment consists of an office; in a very noisy place; or outdoors occasionally in cold or inclement weather.
- The employee is exposed to dust; dirt; grease; machinery with moving parts; and contagious or infectious diseases; or irritating chemicals.
- Work requires use of protective devices such as masks; goggles; breathing apparatus; and gloves.
Salary & Benefits
During the 18-week training classes Recruit Firefighters will make $790.62 weekly. Upon successful graduation of academy Recruits will be assigned to full-time Firefighter positions with an annual minimum compensation of $50161 (including scheduled overtime) working 48/96 shifts.

CPAT Practice
Practice is not mandatory but is highly encouraged and will be available on December 5th & 6th 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. located at 6944 East Oglethorpe Highway Midway GA 31320.
Written Testing/CPAT Test/Interviews
On December 9th and 12th starting at 8 a.m. and individuals should plan to be in attendance all day Liberty County Fire Rescue will conduct written testing CPAT testing and interviews.
